Bao Quiang

Quiang Bao

Quiang was a resident of the Chinese colony on Luna before and during World War 3. He was the last of the Lunar survivors to die before rescue. Quiang was a software and artificial intelligence programmer stationed at Chang'e City when World War 3 broke out. Quiang and most of the Chinese civilians at Chang'e survived the fighting.   As the survivors began to cope with dwindling resources and diminishing hope of rescue, Quiang developed algorithms and simulations to estimate how long their supplies could last. His programs determined that with two hundred survivors, they would only be able to stretch out their supplies for a couple years at most. Quiang was next tasked with determining the optimal number of survivors to stretch out their ability to survive until rescue. Quiang found that that number was eight.   Quiang next had to develop the random selection system to choose the eight survivors (excluding Olivia Allard who the colonists agreed would be the obvious first choice). The selection algorithm decided Quiang should be among the eight survivors. In disbelief, Quiang asked others to check his program. Ultimately it was determined Quiang did not skew the program in his favor, though not everyone in the colony accepted this explanation.   Nevertheless, Quiang felt guilty for surviving because of the program he wrote. He descended into depression and ultimately took his own life. Though this loss was crippling to the morale of the remaining seven, his removal from the equation may have left them with enough supplies to last until rescue.
