Eosong

The Nascentist Republic of Eosong is a nation situated in Eos Chasma on the eastern end of Mars’ Mariner Valley Region. Eosong is populated primarily by the Native Martians that were excommunicated from Hwasong in the early Martian tribal conflicts or made refugees by the later PAC invasion.   Eosong was once a province of Hellas Colony, gaining independence from Earth alongside the rest of Hellas in 2247. Cultural and religious strife that had been brewing between the Nascentist Native Martians and the other newly independent colonists led to Eosong seceding from Hellas into its own independent nation that same year. In the years since, Eosong became a rising power on Mars.

History

Birth of Eosong

After the first contact war, the Native Martians were split over whether to hold fast against the terran invaders or seek peace. By 2204, some of the more reconciliatory tribes began to gravitate towards the new African Union settlement of Fungua Mkono (Open Arms) at the edge of Valles Marineris. At the colony, many of the visiting natives became exposed to terran cultures and saw that Earth had more to offer than war and suffering.   After TASA pulled out of the natives’ ancestral home of Melas Colony in 2207, old grudges between Martian tribes and factions resurfaced. Those that fled the renewed conflict or that were forced into exile fled eastward, seeking refuge in and around Fungua Mkono. These Martians incrementally integrated themselves with the AU colony there.   While some of the Martians fully intermingled with the colonists and adopted terran customs, most preferred to retain their ancestral lineage and traditions, leading to a distinct sub-culture within the colony. The desire to preserve their Native Martian identity while remaining distinct from the turmoil in Hwasong led a Martian elder and intellectual by the name of [SAK] to propose the formation of a new tribal confederation named Eosong.   To separate the Eosongis from their Colonial patrons would likely have led to conflict and a loss of quality of life, as the Eosongis were highly dependant on colonial resources. SAK’s proposal would have the Eosongi people become citizens of Hellas while simultaneously retaining a cohesive Eosongi ethnic identity. The tribes of Eosong voted and agreed to the proposal in 2212. The Eosongis would recognize the authority of the AU colonial administration at Hellas, so long as they were allowed to practice their customs and traditions in peace. Given the Martian majority in the region, Eosong became the official name of the Hellic province encompassing Eos, Ganges, and Coprates Chasmas.

Unrest in Hellas Colony

No sooner had the Eosongis formally integrated into Hellas, tensions began to flare between the Eosongis and the colonists. Some of the native cultural practices, such as the uncomfortably early age of sexual maturity due to the genetic engineering, became points of contention for the colonists that tried to enforce terran cultural standards. The native forms of tribal jurisprudence also created problems as the Martians would often take criminal matters and civil disputes into their own hands, even when dealing with non-natives. Disputes eventually led to small scale but widespread ethnic violence.   While the colonists had reservations about remaining an integrated society with the natives, the African Union and other Hellas sponsors believed helping the Eosongis remained the best political and strategic option. The colonists’ complaints were largely brushed aside and the Eosongis were appeased.   Though not all Eosongis were happy with subordinating themselves to terran rule, the support from Earth made the Eosongi majority adopt a pro-Terran stance. This came at a time when Hellic colonists were beginning to entertain the idea of independence from Terran authority. The cultural clashes with the Native Martians and the Terran response increased this desire.   To appease tensions, the African Union passed the Government of Hellas Act of 2219 (GOHA19). Though GOHA19 had granted more local autonomy to Hellas, the African Union, India, and other sponsors worked to make sure their interests held a majority representation in Hellas’ government under the rationale that Terran institutions had committed considerable resources to the colony’s founding and development. Over the next decade, colonial unrest rose, especially after the [HCity] Incident of 2222.

Second Martian War

At the end of 2225, the internal conflicts among the natives and colonists would take a back seat to a new external threat. The current Supreme Dooktar of Hwasong, SGM sought to reunite the Native Martians under his leadership, by any means necessary. 10,000 Hwasongi warriors stormed into Coprates Chasma and over the Martian highlands into Ganges and Eos Chasmas, overwhelming the local security garrison and Eosongi militias that quickly rose to take up arms in the name of their freedom from Hwasong.   African Union troops stationed in Hellas quickly redeployed west to engage the new threat. While both sides made tactical gains in the chaotic Martian terrain, the African forces and Eosongi militias regained control of Fungua Mkono by early March. By the end of the season, the Hwasongi forces were completely routed, and SGM had been captured by AU Commandos. Negotiations for SGM’s release and the end to the war led to the Treaty of Fungua Mkono, which cemented the boundary between Hwasong and Hellas Colony along the Pradesh Line.

Military

The Eosongi Military is one of the most well developed sectors of Eosong's government, in part due to the constant threat of conflict with Hellas, but also due to the political power wielded by Eosong's military elite. The periods of military rule and frequency of coups is testament to the political power wielded by the Eosongi military. One of the most powerful branches of Eosongi military is the Internal Directorate of Intelligence (IDI), which is Eosong's premiere intelligence agency with authority in domestic and foreign affairs.   In terms of physical power, Eosong's Armed Forces are considerably outnumbered by their Hellic rivals, but Eosong's domestic defense industry and substantial imports from leading powers like TASA keep the power balance relatively even. Eosong is well ahead of its neighbor Hwasong that has spent most of recent history in a state of war, with little chance to develop an effective standing military. Eosong is one of the few Martian nations that maintains a Space Force, though its fleet is less than half the size of their Hellic counterparts. Eosong also possesses nuclear weapons, which is a constant source of tension between the likewise nuclear armed Hellas.
