Rat Packs
The Transnational Aerospace Security Alliance (TASA) issues out Nonperishable Combat Ration Packs nicknamed "Rat Packs".
Rat Packs are rather similar to the MREs of the 20th/21st century, to the point that a common anecdote is that the Rat Packs that TASA issues are still left over from before World War 3. Officials vehemently deny this idea, pointing out that the famines and mass starvation in the post-war years would have meant any stocks of emergency rations would have been picked clean long ago.
Meal items consist mainly of dehydrated foodstuffs in foil or plastic pouches (vacuum sealed to ensure integrity in a variety of atmospheric conditions). The food is usually synthetic and loaded with preservatives. Special care has been taken to avoid crumbly items that could damage sensitive equipment in microgravity. Caloric content is enough to subsist an individual involved in combat activities for a 24 hour period, so portioning a Rat Pack into smaller meals is recommended.
There are currently two menus of Rat Packs, one based on North American cuisine and one on European/Oceanian. Each menu has sixteen varieties of Rat Pack.
