Rover
Rovers are a class of ground vehicle used on Mars, Luna, and other extraterrestrial locations. They are the most common privately owned vehicle beyond Earth. Rovers are generally mid-sized vehicles comparable to jeeps, pickup trucks, or sport utility vehicles. Passenger capacity ranges from 2 to 6, though these numbers are often exceeded by more careless operators. Rovers are built largely for speed and off-road maneuverability, with an exception of some lower quality models and "luxury rovers" that are better suited for improved roadways. Rovers are usually open topped and lack doors to facilitate maneuverability while wearing vac-suits, but some models are designed with enclosed cabs.
Rovers trace their history to the Lunar Roving Vehicle, the first ground vehicles deployed to the Earth's moon during the Apollo program. The LRV was battery powered and driven by four 0.25 horsepower DC motors to carry up to two astronauts around the Lunar landing sites. The vehicles topped out at 8-11 mph and had an autonomous range of 57 miles. As of the 24th century, most rovers exceed these performance stats immensely.
Smaller vehicles designed for 1-2 person maneuverability are known as Quad Rovers. Additionally, while some Rovers can haul cargo, industrial and logistical companies use larger, slow moving ground vehicles known as Crawlers.
Military organizations and insurgencies frequently use Rovers as a patrol vehicle or light motorized transport. These can be armed by design or through jury rigging.
