SF/A-108 Viper

The Viper is a TASA aerospace fighter designed as a suborbital interceptor. The Viper can intercept threats in the upper atmosphere and low earth orbit. The Viper can be outfitted with a wide variety of missiles and other projectiles to shoot down ICBMs, satellites, aircraft, and even smaller spacecraft.   The SF/A-108 Viper is designed to sortie from a ground base, utilizing rocket boosters to achieve a parabolic trajectory that breaks through the Earth's atmosphere. The Viper can achieve some maneuverability in Earth Orbit, but cannot maintain an elliptical orbit on its own.   In the 2280's, TASA engineers and planners discovered that the Viper could be effectively deployed from the orbit of planets and moons with lower gravity than Earth's. As a result, it was retroactively employed as a suborbital close air support craft in support of TASA Marines on Mars and Luna, first seeing extraterrestrial combat during Operation Tranquil Storm on Luna in 2291. Initial successes along with a geopolitical detente on Earth saw more Vipers transferred to Marine expeditionary units for ground support roles. More sophisticated ground attack weaponry was developed to meet the Viper's new role. During the Campaign Against New Dawn, Squadrons of SF/A-108s were frequently carried aboard TASA ships and orbital bases to support ground operations.
