Synthetically Adapted Human Beings

Synthetically Adapted Human Beings [SAHBs] are the pinnacle of genetic engineering. Beginning with the CRISPR breakthrough in the early 21st century, geneticists quickly gained the ability to make vast changes to the human genome. What started with the elimination of genetic diseases quickly branched into phenotypical changes, both cosmetic and practical. The SAHBs were the culmination of a project to design humans ideally adapted for certain harsh environments beyond earth.   Simultaneous to the genetic research, scientists made a breakthrough in artificial gestation that allowed fertilized embryos to be carried to term outside of a human body in a synthetic womb. This breakthrough was incorporated into the SAHB project as a means to quickly establish a human population on a colony world with minimal resource consumption during travel. Before World War 3, the founder of the SAHB project, Dr. Anna Larsson, envisioned a final goal of "seeding" distant worlds with embryonic SAHB colonists that use far fewer resources in transit than a generation ship or sleeper ship with adult colonists.   Today SAHBs make up a significant portion of the inhabitants of Mars, Luna, and artificial satellites. The clear divergences from baseline humanity form the basis of much disdain and prejudice in both directions. The extreme genetic modifications and extracorporeal gestation in particular draws some humans to consider SAHBs "artificial" or "inhuman".
