Oralia
Oralia is essentially an island city-state, separated from the larger world both by geography and the unconventional magical abilities of its inhabitants. It is a chaparral region, similar to the climate and biodiversity of Southern California.
Geography
Oralia is surrounded by water, but does very little trading with countries other than Ensom because of the superstitions surrounding the island. The city-state naturally produces many fruits as well as some grains and beans. The eastern side is rimmed by mountains. The High Court sits in the foothills of the mountains, facing the water to the rest. The poorer parts of the city lie below it, running all the way to the shanty towns up against the ocean. The mountains are mostly to the east and south, leaving the north as mostly sparse scrubland. Fires are a common danger in the area, as well as rock slides from the mountains, which are often seen as a token of disFavour. While Oralia is a city-state, there are suburb towns of a sort that dot the scrubland and the mountains. The Academy, the high seat of learning and feeder system for the power of the high court, sits at the top of one of the mountains to the south, in the spot on which Merrid was first Favoured with power.
Fauna & Flora
Typical animals found in a chaparral climate including rabbits, lizards, goats, scorpions, and mice. Because of the heat and sparse vegetation, most of the predators are relatively small, and include lynx, coyotes, and foxes.The plants are scrubland plants that resist droughts well, but there are also many fruit trees.
Natural Resources
The humans can craft gold at will, but naturally there are fruits, beans, some grain, rock, and fish though there is very little trade. Instead, these natural resources are generally traded internally using the strictly merchant-controlled gold standard.
