Lykosor

A species of four-legged saurien predators whose physiology resembles that of wolves. Lycansors are the second more common monsters that target civilians in the Verdant Steppes. They reside near dried hills and rocky cliffs, but descend into forests if an easy prey shows its head. They never try and catch something in open fields unless they have enough strong members to risk it.   Packs of normal Lykosors rarely number higher than six, but still pose a great threat to wandering cattle and lost explorers. They are experts at ambushing from rocky terrain. Using their scales as camouflage, and their claws as climbing tools, they surprise their preys from above and lash at them until they achieve a kill.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Lykosors have a pretty condensed skin covered in brown to beige scales, with variance according to the regions. Southern species have greener themes while Northern and Eastern specimens are browner and greyer.   Anatomically speaking they present a slender body and a long tail, their figure reminding of wolves in a way, but they are skinnier in comparaison due to the absence of fur. Their front legs have longer foreclaws which are their weapons of choice, their mouths having insufficient biting power.

Genetics and Reproduction

Lykosors lay large eggs. They create large nests where the rain cannot reach. They are cannibals and do not hesitate to eat their children if the bounties are too few.   Species from different regions have no problem reproducting, allowing the species to spread on the rest of Orbido if not for the dense barrier formed by the Great Forests (Fana, Carsil...)

Growth Rate & Stages

It takes four years for a newborn Lycansor to reach his adult size. They live up to 25 at the most, with their reproductive capabilities impaired, though they can keep growing to impressive sizes. The eldest Lycansors can reach twice the height of the adults at the withers.

Ecology and Habitats

Dry stretches of land make their territories. The edge of forest is included and they can pursue a prey into the woods if they feel confident. A pack can occupy about 15 square kilometers of land before letting another pack occupy the next land.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Females and males have the same standing in the pack. There is no assigned leader save for the occasionnal Dire Lykosor when they wish to participate in ambushes.

Domestication

Easier to domesticate than most monsters of Situla despite their aggressive nature. Monster Tamers practice on Lykosors as their first step before trying to bind mana-irradiated monsters with their abilities.

Average Intelligence

Smart enough to plan ambush and assign roles to individuals in preparation. Can determine dangerosity from observation, yet will attack hastily rather than remain patient. Have social bonds with other members of the pack as well as diplomatic relations with exterior groups.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Great olfactory senses, their tongue can detect elements in the air and on objects. While their range is far shorter than that of Dire-Wolves, they are better tracker when the prey is close by. Their sense of hearing is very poor.   They have soft palms before their foreclaws. Thanks to which they are attuned to the vibrations of the ground, and thus able to sense if something is moving in their proximity. Sand and rocky terrain increase their chance at percieving something.

Saurian pack hunters who excel at ambushing from rocky terrain. They survey from a sun-lit vantage, waiting for a chance to strike as one. Adapted to hot dry climates, they mostly eat small mammals but will not hesitate to attack larger prey when they sense an opportunity.

Lykosors make their nests in all kinds of illuminated grounds. The top of a cliff, a dried patch of herbs, or a collapsed brick buildings are their prefered homes. They stay far from inhabited settlements but do not shy away from roads. Deserts, steppes or grassland can welcome these wolf-like lizards in many realms.
