Retainer

A title of the Bunshin Administration that belong to high-ranked nobles under Daimyos or lesser lords of the land. They served at the court as representatives of their people, as commanders, as treasurers, or as bodyguards.
With the forming of the Van Republic, some retainers remained by the side of their sworn lords despite having lost a large amount of political power. The rest of them turned independent, getting a hold of each settlement they owned without paying taxes to their former lieges, though they obey the laws of the still ruling Daimyos.
