To Mareen
To Mareen the White,
Tame-Master of the Culling Legion
By the time you read this letter, even if Snafa himself were to carry it, I would be on my way to battle. The scale of the combat will be as nothing before, and while victory seems likely, the survival of any soldier in battle is not so readily confirmed.
We met many times, but never did I write to you in such a fashion, so I hope you'll allow this personal missive to reach your heart without rejection.
As Humans would call it, my attraction to you transcribes to "adoration". A deep form of love that borders on worship. You may have caught wind of my uncertain approaches throughout our meetings. I must apologize, again, for any discomfort. Every part both physical and internal of your fair being attracted me, from your pale lips to your shy resolve. Your mere presence filled me with calm and warmth. Our discussions helped me forget my father's folly, as I told you before your departure. I do hope to one day reconcile with him... Let me also use this letter to express admiration for your mission. I hope the Great Forest bows to your strength as inevitably as my heart did.
I cannot lie, I held some contempt for Leon but never in great amount. It was obvious how happy he made you in life; the face you made when I reported his fall pierced my soul with shame. With this latest campaign, I face perils greater than he ever did. This is no competition, but I beg you to still bear witness to my own resolve with your open blue eyes; the two diamonds which to me shone brighter than any jewel ever extracted.
When I return, I hope you can have an answer for my call of love. If by the will of the Senders or any force of this world I do not, then have no pity for my fate. I shall share your still burning feelings to Leon and meet him as a friend and brother-in-arms who simply had the luck to meet you first.
Tenderly yours,
Dath Durge,
General of the Imperial Legion and your devoted protector.
