Berg Shark

Berg sharks are fearsome creatures, bane of seal, whale, and ship alike. These arctic predators are larger than normal sharks, and live exclusively in arctic regions of the sea where ice floes are common. Their bodies are grey and blue, and their shovel shaped foreheads support large, frozen chunks of ice that are attached to the berg sharks' heads like helmets. These "ice helms" are the most distinguishing feature of berg sharks. The unique circulatory system of these sharks causes their foreheads to be much colder than the rest of their body, and the sharks use this to their advantage - regularly exposing their foreheads to the freezing winds of the surface to steadily accumulate a large, wedge-shaped helm of frozen water on their heads.   Berg sharks use these helms as weapons, smashing them into targets to devestating effect. This allows the berg shark to hunt much larger prey than ordinary solo predators of their size, and is the key adaptation to their survival. Berg sharks live in small harem groups in which males routinely smash into eachother with their helms to fight for dominance much like rams. To sailors, berg sharks are known for their danger to ships traveling arctic waters. The ice helm of a berg shark frequently remains above the surface as they swim, and so can be easily mistaken for an ice floe. Berg sharks are highly territorial however, and the hull of ship that sails too close may be mistaken either for prey or competitor and be damaged by a berg shark's charge.
