Crabsquid

by Subnautica via Unknown Worlds Entertainment
The strange and terrifying crabsquid lives in the darkest, deepest parts of the sea and preys on those creatures foolish enough to use bioluminescence. Its four gigantic eyespots are specialized to find and track sources of light in the ocean depths, and as such crabsquids are attracted to any source of light as potential prey.   Its lower body is hard and chitinous and has 10 limbs: eight legs tipped with diaphenous fins and two short razor-sharp claws. Its mandibles are small and oddly shaped but contain a powerful neurotoxin. Its upper body consists of two parts: the thin, balloon-like outer membrane that inflates and deflates to allow the crabsquid to propel itself with jets of water and contains veins of bioluminescent lights, and the green, amorphous inner membrane which resembles the body of a squid and contains the crabsquid's internal organs in its squishy, amorphous walls. Contained within are the organs that allow the crabsquid to create the powerful electrical pulses it uses both to hunt and defend itself.   Despite its odd appearance, the crabsquid is, as so many of the creatures of Davy Jones' locker are, as dangerous as they come. While it usually alternates between scavenging the seafloor and hunting scavengers, it will not hesitate to methodically stun, paralyze, and carefully tear apart any divers or Triton it comes across.
Classification: crustacean.   Diet: omnivore.   Lifespan: unknown.   Native Habitat: abyssal seafloor.
