Description
Cthonos is the Triton god of tombs and wealth. He is the brother of the other Triton gods, but is reclusive and spends his time in his halls and workshops beneath the seafloor of the mortal realm. There, he has built a grand labyrinth called Knossos which leads to the seafloor of Tartarus. There, in the darkest corners, he hoards his finest treasures where they can never be stolen. He offers safe passage through Knossos to any mortal souls who pay the toll for the priviledge, leading to an entrenched tradition among Triton to bury the dead with copper pieces over their eyes so that they might pay the toll and make safe return to the sea of souls. On Parthenian ships, two gold pieces are nailed to the keel of the ship to pay for the safe passage of the entire crew should the ship become their grave. His favored animal is the clam.
Appearance
Cthonos has bleached white skin and long, bright pink hair. His eyes are sharp and golden. His lower half is chitinous with red stripes, and he has a tail similar to that of a lobster or shrimp.
Personality
Cthonos is immensely intelligent and reclusive. He is interested most in his projects of industry and architecture and dislikes the company of others. Despite this, he works frequently with his brother Thassus and keeps a special place in his heart for both his siblings and Tritonkind.
Worship
Cthonos is worshipped by those mourning the dead, builders who strive to match his prowess, and bankers or those who focus on accumulation of wealth. His shrines and temples are almost always found at gravesites or the locations of historical disasters, and mourners frequently bring bits of treasure resulting in an eventual stockpile of wealth that attracts the favor of Cthonos. Though uncommon, non-Tritons are occasionally buried with copper over their eyes to pay Cthonos's toll, and while these dead are not favored by the god as Triton are, he will reluctantly grant them passage through Knossos all the same.

A gold coin within a dark purple chamber with decorated pillars for walls and a triangular roof.
