Description
Perhaps the most feared among the major gods of the sea, Davy Jones is the god of The Deep. Lord of black waters, master of The Kraken, singer of secrets best left unknown, and purveyor of fates worse than death, Davy Jones is a callous and inscrutable god about whose machinations nothing is known except the surety of their ill intent. He is responsible both for the death of his wife, the goddess Kymanestra, and the sinking of Atlantis, former capital of the late Parthenian Empire. Little is known about his true nature, and what is known may very well be a lie or an illusion. He enslaves the bodies of the drowned and the souls of the forsaken to serve him in the black depths of the sea. He is unknowable - best feared and avoided - and never to be trusted.
Appearance
The true appearance of Davy Jones is unknown, at least to mortals that remain sane and alive. He manifests as a tall and imposing humanoid figure, always shrouded in shadows or mist. His true size and shape is unknown. His body and clothes, when discernable, move as though they were underwater. He has been seen with slithering tentacles and the edge of a jacket around his form, and has one or more hands with three knuckles on each long finger. The number and nature of his legs is a mystery, as they make no sound as he walks. His face is fully obscured, he may wear a hat or crown, and his deep and warbling voice may change in an isntant. He has been seen at times with frilled fins, angler lures, and razor sharp teeth, but of only this can an observer be sure to see clearly: his glowing yellow eyes that are the trademark of his corruption.
Personality
Davy Jones is a quiet god, often content to callously observe or pull strings behind the scenes without saying a word to his "instruments". When he does speak, he is demeaning and sarcastic. He has a razor sharp wit and a sardonic sense of humor. He is a thief through and through, prideful, greedy, and calculating. He sees the spoils of his skullduggery as tools for further schemes. He claims any sunken treasure as his own, and frequently curses those who would take what he considers to be rightfully his. The worst of these curses he reserves for those who steal from him personally: The Black Spot, which dooms its bearer to be ceaselessly hunted to the ends of the earth by The Kracken, the most terrible of Davy Jones' pet monsters. He frequently enters bargains with mortals, and enjoys the game of twisting their end of the deal in his favor and to their torment as much as possible. He is generally hated or tolerated by other gods. This suits him just fine, as he views them as competition.
Worship
Davy Jones is frequently worshipped by con artists, thieves, and those who trade in secrecy. Beyond this, he is oftened worshipped by dealers in the occult and turned to by those whose last resort is dumb luck. While few in polite society will openly admit to seeking the blessings of Davy Jones, they will certainly pray to avoid him and his wrath. It is also common for sailors to beseech him to spare the souls of drowned or shipwrecked comrades. Prayers to Davy Jones may be acompanied by a secret, as it is known that he favors those who spill the juiciest secrets. Shrines built in his name, considered unsavory and disreputable, are often found in criminal hideouts and slums. Otherwise his worship is carried out via holy symbols engraved onto coins or tucked into hidden pockets. It is common to attribute instances of fair or ill fortune to Davy Jones, and an uncommonly lucky individual may be said to "have Davy Jones' own luck!" His clerics, frequently gamblers or tricksters themselves, teach that life is a competition, and preach self interest above all else. They often provide tools and methods used to "get ahead" of the competition, and their dark, clausterphobic temples always have soundproof rooms for discreet public use.
