Kymanestra (kee-MAH-nest-rah)

Description

Kymanestra was formerly the Triton goddess of the currents, tides, and waves. She was kidnapped by Davy Jones and trapped in the depths of the ocean, triggering the Theikotic War. The end of this war between factions of men and gods alike saw Davy Jones kill Kymanestra and sink the city of Atlantis into the depths, shattering the weakened Parthenian empire. Though she may be dead, she still recieves prayers from her devoted followers, and her clerics still recieve divine spells as a final, parting gift from their dead goddess.

Appearance

Kymanestra appears as a slender as large as her siblings but has a frilled serpent's tail in place of legs that is nearly 40 feet long. These frills and fins extend up her back and head where they meet her long, tumultuous mane of seafoam hair. She has deep blue skin with a slowly changing pattern reminiscent of the way light falls through the waves.

Personality

Kymanestra is intelligent, curious, and persistent.

Worship

Kymanestra is worshipped dearly by Parthenians who see her as a martyr of the Theikotic war and a symbol of a golden age long past. She is regularly invoked by those seeking change for the better, and is still prayed to for gentle currents and safe passage. Her clerics carry large amounts of water with them when they travel above the surface, and spill or splash it upon the ground for spells, ceremonies, and prayers.     It is reccomended that players learn no more about the Kymanestra as this is information that only a handful of men and gods posses, and reading it may spoil some of the magic should Kymanestra become relevant to their games.

In truth, Kymanestra is not dead, and the events that led to the Theikotic War are much more complicated.   Davy Jones had long coveted Kymanestra's domain over the waves and tides. His domain was then merely luck, secrets, and the unknown, but as the ambitious god he is, he sought to expand his reach over mortal men. The seven seas define Orentia, and most mortal lives are beholden to it in some fashion. Davy Jones desired these valuable seas, and so desired their master Kymanestra. To claim his prize Davy Jones sought the goddess's hand in marriage, and so began courting Kymanestra in secret. Kymanestra was intruiged and pleased by these flirtatious overtures, and so for many years the god of luck and secrets and the goddess of waves and change would sneak away together, enjoying both eachother and the wonders of Orentia. Finally, while resting in Davy Jones's hidden home beneath the dark waters of the Depths, Davy Jones asked for Kymanestra's hand in marriage. Though they loved eachother, each in their own way, Kymanestra refused, for she was the goddess of waves and change, and could not bring herself to be tied to any unchanging thing like a marriage.   This rejection made Davy Jones furious. If he could not have the object of his desire as an equal lover and partner, he would have her as a prisoner. He trapped her in his lair beneath the waves, and it became known to the world that she was being held there. Furious at this betrayal, Kymanestra refused even more strongly to marry or obey Davy Jones, even as the Theikotic war began. As the war dragged on and more and more destruction was wrought by both sides, Davy Jones brought her daily news of the death and pain inflicted upon her people, tormenting her even as she attempted to escape. As she continued to imagine the suffering caused by the war she could not see, Kymanestra made a bargain with her lover turned captor. Knowing that Davy Jones would not free her even if his allies lost, and knowing that her allies would sacrifice anything to free her, she asked Davy Jones to end the war by faking her death and free the people of Atlantis from the siege they endured. In exchange, she would no longer attempt to escape his clutches. This bargain was, unbeknownst to her, advantageous to Davy Jones, for The Kracken had been defeated and his back was against the wall. He aquiesced to her bargain, and the two staged and elaborate ruse that led the world to believe that Kymanestra had been slain by the cruel and desperate Davy Jones.   The war ended in tragedy, and Davy Jones believed that, now with no-one searching for her, he had as much time as he needed to wear Kymanestra down until she gave him both her hand in marriage and her power over the waves. Kymanestra however, has no intention of doing so, and is waging a silent war of patience with her captor. She believes that she is far more patient than he, and that she need only wait for his frustration to overtake him to be set free. Even now, the two fight a silent battle in Davy Jones's locker, waiting for the other to blink, refusing to flinch themselves. The only thing more important to Kymanestra than her silent battle with Davy Jones is her secrecy. She knows that if her family were to learn that she yet lives, there would be another, more destructive war for her sake; and so, to protect her loved ones, she ensures that none learn the truth behind her "death".
