Lorekeeper

Among the warrens, history is of paramount importance. The Underdwellers want their children, and their children’s children, to know what it was like before the Order of Luminance came to power. There is a rich history among the original five nations in Orliüm, and the Lorekeepers are tasked with making sure their history is not lost to the devastation of the world.   To become a Lorekeeper, one must first study the history of their own warren. They are required to know the year when it was founded, and recite every leader of the warren throughout its history. Moreover, major events and prominent families are necessary study. Reading and writing is necessary, and studying at least one of the languages of the nations, usually the one in which their warren would have resided, is mandatory.   Once the current Lorekeeper of the warren has deemed that the student has the appropriate knowledge, they are sent to the city warren of Lotish for advanced study. Here they dive into the history of the nations, their accomplishments and inventions, and their conflicts. The Crimson Wars and the subsequent rise of the Order of Luminance is perhaps the most heavily kept history, though much of the volumes documenting that time reside in surface towns and tend to be inaccessible.   The most important purpose of a Lorekeeper, however, is to gather and document the history of the scattered peoples of the world since the Brightening. Recorded history after the event is scarce or has been destroyed. Lorekeepers will often travel the world to seek out their people’s history and return it to Lotish’s library, and teach the oral history of other lands to the children they visit.   Since Underdwellers have little contact with the people of the surface, the histories presented after the Brightening tend to be biased in favor of the Darklings, presenting the surfacers as a whole and the Order in particular as power hungry oppressors.
