Burazaich (burr-uh-Z-EYE-CHK)
In between two peaks in the Shadowspires mountain range of central Ostelliach, constant lightning storms rage over a forsaken ruin known as Burazaich.
Geography
Burazaich is relatively level stretch of rocky land in a gap between the peaks rising up of the Shadowspire mountains. The rock is relatively flat as it is constantly being struck by lightning that creates then levels spiraling fulgurite columns, shaping then destroying these silica-based structures. Craters appear in the area then are leveled again as the area around is struck repeatedly. There is no foliage growing in the area, no cover, no noticeable boulders or cliffs. Only the fulgurite, spiraling upward only to be shattered again.
The rock is covered by sand that is created then shaped then destroyed again by the lightning in a neverending cycle, slowly grinding down the plains over time.
Artist's rendition of fulgurite, not actual; used for reference of Burazaite.
Ecosystem
While there is no mundane plant or animal that will brave the Burazaich lightning planes, there are a number of magical ones that love it. Fulmens - small lightning elementals - love the area, as do Air Genasi on pilgramages. In addition, tiny microorganisms that enjoy the charged air are said to make the land dance with firefly-like sparkles after dark, floating in the air and sprinkling the sand.
Localized Phenomena
Lightning storms, the likes of which are unseen elsewhere in the continent. The air is charged and sparkles with the tang of ozone in a way nowhere else is.
Climate
Muggy, stale air charged with an ozone scent. Though rainclouds loom and threaten overhead, it actually rarely rains in the Burazaich plains. Instead, the air feels heavy and full of potential (because it is), a constant threatening humidity. The temperature rarely drops below 50 degrees, though in the summer it can raise to over 100 Farenheit often.
Natural Resources
Fulgurite, created when the lightning strikes and solidifies sand, is a prized geological oddity and research component. There is promising evidence that the specific fulgurite of Burazaich is capable of limited piezoelectricity, conducting charges and sending voltage into batteries. They are also prized as spell-casting components for evocation magic, light sources due to the microorganisms living in them, and yummy snacks for lightning elementals.
The special fulgurite found in Burazaich is actually called Burazaite, though fulgurite is very uncommon elsewhere so almost all fulgurite one comes across is Burazaite.
Process by which fulgurite is created underground from lightning strikes.
Tourism
A few fools continue to offer tours of Burazaich, getting either very good at it or closing up shop quickly because of how dangerous it is.
