One Who Smiles For the Dark
(a.k.a. Oney)
One Who Smiles For the Dark, affectionately known as Oney (One-ee), is the head of health services for the Ad Hoc Adventurers Recruitment and Resettlement Guild, in particular known for xyr investment in the mental health space that they oversee. A slightly smaller-than-average Bugbear with an endearing lisp and rumbling purr of a laugh, Oney is a favorite fixture in the mess hall or a sunny stroll around the training grounds behind the guild hall.
Physical Description
Facial Features
Thick, expressive eyebrows and a crooked smile stuffed full of two large fang/tusks on the bottom and plenty of other sharp teeth as well. Large hobgoblin-esque ears of xyr species, pierced several times over with asymmetrical jewelry of all kinds. A wide, snub nose with a slight upturn.
Physical quirks
Bugbears aren't the most common around the Cities, let alone one that is so soft and femme-looking as Oney. Oney keeps xyr fur silky smooth and conditioned to a gloss, with many trinkets and small gifts braided into the fur like treasures that clink when they move. They completely forego any sort of adventure gear or armor nowadays and embrace flowy clothes. Oney keeps their hair on their head grown out long and swept to the side, modeled after Viking-esque braid-and-side-shave asymmetrical styles.
Mental characteristics
Personal history
Oney came to the guild fairly young, seeking a life of adventure in a healer role. However, after a few failed parties that couldn't get past their prejudice about a Bugbear in their party, Oney went freelance for a while and focused on humanitarian relief efforts. After enough time making xyr name known in this way, they were invited to the guild in a staff role after the retirement of the previous head of medical staff. Although the guild had been talking about mental health as part of this suite of services for some time, Oney was the one who really emphasized its importance and baked it into guild protocol from recruitment to missions and retirement.
Gender Identity
If one had to put words to it, Oney would likely call xyrself nonbinary, demi-girl or otherwise femme-leaning. They don't tend to associate with their assigned gender at birth and quite like neo-pronouns like xe/xym/xyr but enjoy presenting mostly feminine and don't even take offense to misgendering (though xe says they're lucky for being born a Bugbear, since most people don't know Bugbear genders at first glance anyway).
Sexuality
Oney is open about being primarily asexual/aromantic, preferring to collect friends over partners. (They say this also helps them feel able to be close to coworkers and clients without worrying they're going to catch untoward feelings, though the ace-ness happened before the profession.)
Education
Not a society known for its high-quality education, Oney didn't really get much book learning until self-taught medical learnings led them to the guild. From there, they increased their reading prowess (though always feel like they still struggle with it) enough to read the guild's textbooks and emerging research in health fields.
Social
Mannerisms
A deep, contagious laugh almost like the purr of a large jungle cat; a lisp through their tusks; the tendency to shake xyr head to make all of the trinkets entangled in it jingle, especially when combatting a negative thought their client is having.
Hobbies & Pets
Frequently seen carrying a small, glowing jeweled bug among the trinkets in their hair; calls it "Glowbert" and sometimes lets people hold it as a sort of worry-stone during sessions if they want.
