Zali's Eye (Ts-ah-lee's Eye)
Zali's Eye is a massive lighthouse on the extreme southeast corner of the Sphinx's Claw peninsula, representing one of only 2 landmarks in the entire area (the other being a companion built at the same time, the town of Zuri Nexus).
Zali's Eye is important for its actual purpose of guiding ships navigating the Calla Ocean/Deepdrop waters, of course. However, it is also valued as an artistic marvel, sculpted entirely of pearlescent ivory-colored Iridite, a unique type of glass formed by arcanically preserving ice sheets. Artists are inspired by descriptions of the work, though travel out to actually view it up close is rare due to the inhospitable chill of Sphinx's Claw. That being said, the trek is not rare for those doing a Godcrafting themed around creative magic and artistry.
Purpose / Function
To guide ships traveling through the Calla Ocean safely along the coast and around the Deepdrop trench systems.
Architecture
Zali's Eye is a nearly 300-foot-tall lighthouse with sheer, smooth sides of glimmering permaice known as Iridite, set in multi-colored bands spiraling up its length in hues of purples, pinks, blues, and ivory whites. Beneath the artistic form, the bones of the building are reinforced metal, concrete, and warded wood to protect against storm or wind.
Zali's Eye has a winding spiral staircase leading up through 10 stories of landings. It also includes a mechanical lift to visit the top, although in the winter this becomes largely unusable due to the wind conditions in the area.
The Eye is similar to most lighthouses in that it has a smaller Keeper's quarters at its base, but also a few sparse rooms along the way for people visiting (trading off Keeper duties, bringing supplies, performing repairs usually). It also features a workshop fitted with both magical/alchemical and mundane tools.
The shining jewel atop the tower, the actual Light for the Lighthouse, is a piece of Iridite glass embued with a magically enhanced Light-based spell that is recharged regularly by the keeper. There is also a mechanical light installed as a failsafe, with a magi-tech battery courtesy of Arnun-Ohx installed to store up power as a backup. This generator can run the light for up to 3 days if no Keeper is available. Rumor has it there's a portal for Keepers to teleport to and from the tower in case of emergency, but this is just rumor as far as outsiders know, given it would be a huge security flaw if widely publicized.
Defenses
Not that there's ever really been many incidents of people attacking the lighthouse, but its naturally remote location inherently dissuades most folks. The only real reasons to attack it would be to vandalize something beautiful, create a very very remote hideout, or try to mess with ships passing by. (The latter would be the worst option, obviously, but so far hasn't happened.)
History
Zali's Eye was made by artisans located in Zuri Nexus in 372 AB. It actually is built on the ruins of the previous lighthouse, which was much less beautiful and also much less structurally sound; it fell some time during the calamitous natural disasters immediately after The Breaking and was not able to be repaired or rebuilt until after the Finite Architects discovered the secrets of Godcrafting.
Then, the people of Zuri Nexus decided that they would make something structurally incredible to elevate their name across Ostelliach. This resulted in many, many design trials and discussions over decades before construction could begin. The design that was selected required vast amounts of Iridite and skilled artisans (so many that more had to be trained up). Construction also was delayed by the remote location and difficulty bringing non-locally-sourced materials to the site. And so, construction actually took the better part of 4 years before it could be called complete. Then, the deliberation for who would be chosen as the first Keepers took nearly half a year longer before the lighthouse was actually in service once more.
Tourism
Artists are inspired by descriptions of the work, though travel out to actually view it up close is rare due to the inhospitable chill of Sphinx's Claw. That being said, the trek is not rare for those doing a Godcrafting themed around creative magic and artistry. The occasional navigational or architectural scholar will also make the trek.
There are also those who rumor that the formation is haunted, a word which is bandied about often in Ostelliach for any place that is suitably remote and/or mysterious, but it's still enough to draw people's attention.
