Wayfinder
Iya, being lost to a multitude of planar incursions, is in need of those who would sacrifice their time, energy, and possibly their life to explore lost sectors, discover hidden treasures and truths, and protect the city and its citizens. Wayfinders are those people who are willing to put their life on the line to help Iya progress further. Wayfinders are adventurers, thrill-seekers, mercenaries, and vagabonds that work for either The Federation, 3rd party sponsors, or themselves.
Career
Qualifications
There is no formal education that is strictly necessary for one to become a Wayfinder. However, many Wayfinders have specialties in other disciplines which can be seen as a boon when it comes to hiring. The Federation requires most of their Wayfinders to pass an exam that they are constantly iterating upon to make sure they weed out those they would deem weaklinks.
Career Progression
There is no traditional progression structure in being a Wayfinder, but there is renown. Those Wayfinders who are high achievers are more likely to get hired again, to get more pay for their services, to have more sway in the city, and a myriad of other possible things.
Payment & Reimbursement
Pay for being a Wayfinder is on a per job basis as well as a per employer basis. The Federation has a flat rate that they pay their on-staff Wayfinders and special pay rates for those they would deem contractors. The knowledge, treasure, or other objects of value that are found during an expedition into one of the lost sectors may also be considered payment, but it all depends on the terms agreed upon by the Wayfinder and their employer.
Other Benefits
Renown is the name of the game when it comes to Wayfinders, its the only other currency that keeps Iya spinning. Whether further recognition is awarded to a Wayfinder depends on how grand their achievements are. The Federation, however, does have a policy of non-disclosure, meaning any Wayfinders that are working for them directly are not supposed to speak on or of anything they found or encountered while on expedition.
Perception
Purpose
Wayfinders are the hunters, the explorers, the cartographers, the treasure hunters adventurers of Iya. It is because of them that new Miratech is discovered, that The Federation is able to build forward bases in lost sectors, that certain resources are able to be collected for the masses.
Social Status
Some Iyans see Wayfinders as heroes, others see them as workhorses, depending on one's societal station. Wallers see the Wayfinding life as a way to get out of their poor situation where as the Magnates see Wayfinders as tools to gain more wealth and power.
History
Wayfinder as a term for this profession is fairly new, created by The Federation as a way to sensationalize the role. The Primer of the Federation was once considered a great hero of Iya and he did what the modern Wayfinders do now.
sounds like a tiring but very adventurous job, indeed. I could sense that the sensationalism is imposed upon by the Federation in hopes of gaining more willing Wayfinders. Thanks for sharing this interesting article.
