It is the year 2674.

The Orion Arm of the Milky Way Galaxy isn't what it used to be.

The once-proud Parallax, dominated by the reptiloid Nall, has been shattered by a supernova that wrecked the holy world of Lebal and left the Vox Nalia Church in shambles. Lebalese refugees struggle to find their way to safe haven. Worlds that the Nall once held in an iron grip have torn loose and found their freedom.

The Fringe , once mostly a refuge of pirates, smugglers, and thieves, these days keeps the name out of a sense of irony. Tomin Kora is now the corporate homeworld of the Fagin Five Hundred - the businesses that thrive outside the authority of any government besides the Shareholders.

The Stellar Consortium can't seem to decide what's fact or fiction between one day and the next, although that's largely determined by whatever political faction holds sway at any given time. Lately, a radical group known as the Dukes - adherents of a dead xenophobe named Duke Buchanan - has been pushing the narrative that Nall refugees and other aliens making the exodus to Consortium worlds aren't doing so out of desperation. They're doing it out of greed and a desire to overwhelm human societies, the Dukes say.

And they mean to stop this any way they can.
