The Abaraden Inquisition

The Abareden Inquisition was an organization of Magic users who serve as the peacekeeping arm of the Abareden Church. During the Litia dynasty, the Inquisition grew to be a militant force of comparable strength to any standing military.

Structure

The Inquisition was led by the High Inquisitor who answered only to the High Gardener of the Church of Abareus.    Upon entry into the Inquisition, recruits took their vows and became initiates until their initial training was completed. During the duration of this training, Initiates were confined to the Burning Heart Monastery in the Grouden Province.    Upon the completion of their training, Initiates would be Knighted as a Knight of the 1st Degree.   A Knight of the 1st Degree would be assigned a post throughout the Kingdom and would serve in tandem with more seasoned Knights of the 2nd Degree. Throughout their early career as Knight, an inquisitor could hope to eventually be called to a higher posting, however, the bulk of the rankings of the Inquisition were these Knights.    A distinguished Inquisitor could be promoted to the ranks of Proctor, Intendant, or Arbiter at the discretion of the High Inquisitor and High Gardener.   A Proctor would lead teams of Knights on special assignments or serve as wardens of Inquisition Internment Facilities that served as corals for people deemed in violation of church standards.    An Intendant served as a chief presence in any settlement deemed large enough to warrant a permanent posting of inquisitors.   An Arbiter was a position of high honor, given to only the most distinguished Inquisitors. They served the High Gardener directly and answered only to him. When not on assignment, an Arbiter could roam the land as they felt necessary and enact church justice wherever they saw a need.

Culture

The Inquisition was highly militant and the chain of command dictated all aspects of their daily life. In the Inquisition, one was expected to follow orders of their superior as if Abareus, Himself had commanded it.    Critics of the organization often lobbied complaints that while the rank and file of the inquisition were simply zealots following their convictions and orders, the higher ranking inquisitors were criticized as chiefly political who abused the divine power they were handed to consolidate their own power. These critiques were hardly ever addressed by the leadership.

Public Agenda

The goal of the Inquisition was the "purification of all heresies by means of holy fire and watchful eyes."

Assets

All members of the Inquisition are granted an aspect of the King's Flame, a Divine power that allowed them a magical Pyrokinesis. This magical flame could not be extinguished by normal means and was especially effective when used against Shade Beasts.   The standard issue weaponry included an enchanted sword that could channel the aspect of the Flame contained in the body of the Inquisitor.    Inquisitors were also trained in basic sword and shield combat and advanced military tactics. An average Knight of the Inquisition wore chainmail and robes that bore their organizational colors of red and white.

History

As Gelfrey Litia took the throne of Otmorea he faced intense pressure on multiple sides of his borders from multiple adversaries. In an effort to alleviate the oncoming foreign threats, he granted an aspect of the Flame to Neren Riles, who then was able to replicate the flame and distribute it to a team of Otmorean Mercenaries. This team of warriors was able to band together to secure Otmorean borders and would go on to ensure Otmorean supremacy upon the continent of Tuin for generations.    In recognition of his service, Gelfrey appointed Neren Riles as his High Counselor, who then served as counselor to Gelfrey's successor Holden. It was under Holden's leadership that the Abareden Inquisition was firmly established with Riles as the first High Inquisitor.
