I liked sitting next to the fireplace when visiting. Not just because of how crowded it was during birthdays, but also because then I would sit near his chair. There are many beautiful moments with grandpa that I remember, too many to list here. But there are two specific stories I'd like to share.
First off, wine corks. Once upon a time as a child, I needed some wine corks for some handicraft, which grandpa gave me. I was so happy with them. And for years after, whenever we came over, he would tell me "come here, I have something for you", and give me more corks. In the end, I never did much with them, but I was always happy to know he was thinking of me.
And then there was chess. As a child, I would often play chess with grandpa when I visited. One day I managed to win. I was so proud! He congratulated me, then explained exactly how I could have won several turns prior. He made sure that I learned even from success. Even years later, studying a chess puzzle was a ritual that was just part of visiting him.
Even now I still encounter something small, that makes me think of him, filled with love. A wine cork. A chess puzzle. A fireplace. A repaired bike. Moments that bring back memories. Moments in which he is with me. Where I know that I will never forget him. Grandpa, I will miss you.
