Grass Cake

Grass cake is disgusting. The only reason we eat it is because the elders are terrified that we'll get struck by lightning if we don't, or something like that.
— A new initiate, who will in a few short years believe exactly the same
Grass cake is one of the few holdover elements from when the Cult of No Zeminek was mainly a Rinifen organization. It's not entirely clear as to why they used the cake, since they don't particular enjoy it either. Regardless, it remains an important element to the initiation ceremony.

A Suspect Recipe

The exact recipe for grass cake is one of the more sacred elements for the Cult, so we are only aware of a few of the ingredients, but they are more than enough to make one wary about consuming it.   These ingredients include:
  • Red onions
  • Grave dust
  • Habanero peppers
  • Zero calorie sweetener
  • Probably grass?
It is molded into the usual shape of a multi-tiered cake, and is baked in an unusually hot oven. Some sects of the cult will use icing to decorate the cake, usually a standard buttercream tinted green. Others insist on the purity of the cake and refuse all decoration.

To Clear Out Unwanted Initiates

The cake is baked by the most senior members of the cult, prepared to exacting specifications, and left to sit outside for six hours after it is baked. The prospective members, who by this time have undergone several rather taxing trials over the course of the ritual, are led past the cake at some point around hour five. This is the most common breaking point, and about half of them flee.   Consuming the cake is the last stage of the initiation rite. In the olden days, it was required that the initiates finish the entire cake, which occasionally led to new cultists essentially press-ganging their friends into joining them so there would be more people to eat the cake. In light of that fact, that unwilling and uncommitted members were now joining, the rules were relaxed and it is now only a requirement for each initiate to eat a single piece.
