Dragon's Eye Crystals
Properties
Material Characteristics
Dragon's Eye Crystals are large crystals that come in a whole spectrum of colours, and in the centre a spiral of highly conductable mineral called Loraite.
Physical & Chemical Properties
Dragon's Eye Crystals are used as spellcasting foci as they are extremely potent at channeling magic. It is thought that the mixture between the Loraite spiral and the dense crystal surrounding it is what gives the Dragon's Eye Crystal this ability; Loraite on its own is extremely conductable of magic, and is prone to exploding when in a raw form.
Geology & Geography
Dragon's Eye are found all across Oxdara, though mostly in Erendoc. A new mine has been located in recent time in Venka, in the Ruizar Empire.
History & Usage
Everyday use
It is commonly used as a spellcasting focus for mages, being naturally potent at conducting and transmuting the Life Force of Oxdara. It is thought that the crystal's have a similar composition to Miloran Crystals, as they too are extremely magically conductive, but that the Loraite mineral in the Dragon's Eye is what gives it this ability as a focus, rather than a battery like the Miloran Crystals.
Most crystal balls sold in Erendoc are made of the Dragon's Eye Crystal.
Refinement
Refining Dragon's Eye Crystals is a delicate matter. Like most gems, collectors and jewllers prefer a nicely cut gemstone, but cutting the crystal too far runs the risk of the Loraite becoming exposed and possibly exploding. Refined gemstones made of Dragon's Eye make beautiful jewellery, and really shows why the crystals are named as such, as they look like enchanting Draconic eyes.
Byproducts & Sideproducts
When cutting the crystal into smaller sizes for jewellery, the off cuts of the crystal are ground down into dust and can be used in the place of Ruby, Diamond or other such gemstone dust. Some offcuts are refined themselves into jewels, but are often priced lower as they dont have the Dragon eye like quality.
