Hell's Scar

On the continent of Oxerune, a huge canyon scores the earth, tearing it open with depths none has dared explore.

Geography

Once surrounded by fertile plains, during the events of the Undoing, an entity of unknown size and origin, though suspected to be bigger than mountains and coming from the depths of the Sectors; carved a huge gash into the surface of the world, tearing down and opening to magma like a bleeding scar. The potent aether engulfing Hell's Scar and its surroundings has reduced it to a sandy wasteland where nothing lives or grows. Nothing of this plane anyway.   The canyon has not been measured but is estimated to be over 650 km (or over 400 mi) down. While rock enthusiasts speculate there must be tons of undiscovered rocks in the canyon walls, the heat and rampant aether make it far too dangerous to come within a 450 mile (725 km) radius.

Ecosystem

A barren desert where nothing of this world can thrive. Near the raging portals leading to different points in the Sectors, demonic life has begun to spill out. It doesn't make it far from its portal's edge due to the storms and intense heat emanating from the canyon. Patrols of demons from the Sectors can occasionally be seeing making journies between portals, sometimes braving the hostile environment in the hopes of making a journey quicker, sometimes surveying for any enemies. Hell's Scar has often become a site for battles between the Sectors.

Ecosystem Cycles

Portals occasionally close and open with no discernible pattern. However, the hell storms that surround Hell's Scar seem to peak during summer with leading theories being that the increased heat triggers more storms. Some opponents believe that due to the intense heat from the canyon the relatively mild increase in temperature from summer couldn't possibly impact the canyon and instead believe that cross winds from the ocean could be stirring up the storms further.   Conversely, the hell storms seem to bottom out during the height of winter and the general consensus seems to be that the cooler weather does in fact reduce the activity of the hell storms. Unfortunately, no one is able to get close so all observations are made from on board ships nearby.

Localized Phenomena

The hell storms and portals are distinct to this area. They can arise in other places but ever since the young gods sealed them back it is incredibly rare.

Hell Storms

A combination of intense aether commingling with potent demonic energy has kicked up storms of terrifying proportions. In the rare lulls the storm clouds resemble normal ones if not for the ethereal lilac glow they emanate. While lightning is most common, it is not uncommon to see bursts of flame from the storms colliding with each other. The rain burns all it touches and the parched ground is only further poisoned by it. Another side effect of the storms is the impermeable haze that few can see through unless blessed with sight in magical darkness or attuned with magic concentrated around the Scar itself. Be careful not to fall in. The occasional tornado may be seen if the cross winds kick up just right, consequently fire tornadoes aren't impossible either.

Portals to the Sectors

The Portals to the Sectors vary in color based on which sector they lead to, but they all share one thing in common. Should you survive the rest of the Scar's horrors, approaching a portal is a risk. Demonic energy tends to react violently with seemingly anything so when it gathers togethers it explodes. Those who are attuned to it can sense where it is gathering to avoid it, but otherwise you may find yourself in the middle of an explosion. The portals to the 3rd and 1st Sectors overspill slightly with twisted plants that seem to thrive on the acidic rain. They spread the furthest out of the portal spreading up to 7 ft (2 m) from the portal. It attempts to grow further but is frequently buffeted by the surrounding phenomena to the point of being destroyed. The plants from other portals only make it a scant 3 ft (0.9 m) before succumbing.

Climate

While generally considered warm year-round it is suspected that despite being near the equator the temperature drops significantly during winter as nature's attempt to quell the hell storms. It is said that prior to the Undoing, the whole continent was blessed with pleasant breezes and warm days fitting of a picturesque day in a maid's tale.
