After being pressured by their superiors back home, Kounélian scientists and Foxtonian expeditionary members conduct an attempt to re-activate the dormant Gate 
Once scientists attempted to charge the gems with magic and operate the controls of the device, the gate opened up a highly-unstable and dangerous rift to other worlds and planes of existance.
The sudden discharge of extra-planar energy vaporized body and soul of those directly in front and behind the gate. Attempts to close the gate seemed futile.
Survivors swiftly vacated the area and fled above ground as beings from the other side of the rift closed in on the opened gateway.
