Jakunguh (Yah-kung-guh)

The Jakunguh originate from one of the more heavily populated parts of the neighbouring galaxy. Their presence in Vellikka predates the Vellich people. They found what they considered an uninhabited planet and tried to improve it to use it as holiday destination for Jakunguhs and others.    When they realised it was too far out of the way for even the more adventurous peoples, and so wasn't worth spending time on the upkeep, they abandoned the planet.    Their presence can still be felt in the structures and technologies they left behind which were adopted by the Vellich as "Places of Spirits" several millennia after the Jakunguh left.

Naming Traditions

Unisex names

First names are less commonly used outside of family relationships, unless required for differentiation. They tend to be short and end in hard sounds like "ck", "t", "d", "ff", "n", "gk", "lk", "ft".

Family names

Used before the first name. When used in full family names are normally long, containing any where from three to nine syllables long. They are shortened to make them more palatable for casual conversation.    For example, Garkungtihaminikallex would be shorted to Garlex, taking the first and last syllables.

Other names

Nicknames are common amongst friends, based either on the family name or on a defining trait of the person.

Culture

Major language groups and dialects

Jaka is the name for the base language which the four different languages originate from. These are Jaka-Belff, Jaka-Narhan, Jaka-Senit and Jaka-Tragak. Each of the four languages is different and has its own inflections and nuances, but someone fluent in any of the Jaka languages should be able to understand about 75% of that being spoken in a less familiar language.    For example, in Jaka-Narhan the word for "moving forward slowly without enthusiasm" is a single syllable with a negative connotation, but in Jaka-Tragak there is no single word for this, but one speaking that language would likely use a phrase which translates as "backwards like the dead" to mean the same thing. However, both languages have multiple words for "moving with haste", each word relating to a different level of haste or type of movement or direction, and several overlap in the written language but pronunciations differ slightly.

Shared customary codes and values

The Jakungah are great believers in progress, whether that is technological, astronomical, scientific, emotional or physical. Those who grow up in Jakungah societies or grow up practicing Jakungah culture are often adept at finding enterprising ways to make their way through life, either by improving the idea which is in front of them or latching on to a new plan or scheme to make progress.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

The Jakungah find beauty in symmetry and clarity. Geometric shapes and hard lines are very popular. Historically this is because these are seen as signs of progress. Where nature is often less well defined, strong lines and definition are signs of how nature has been improved.
