Quackerly Green

"There are too many small towns and villages across Unity to mention. They are, in a word, quaint. But once you've visited one, there's no need to visit anymore. It's possible to have too much of a quaint thing."

Geography

Quackerly Green is situated in the middle of Trapip, one of the four largest continents on Unity in The Aspiration System.   It sits in the Eider River Valley and is one of about 20 similarly sized villages in Eidershire. It sits between two mountains; to the northwest is Green Hill and to the southeast is Quickerly. The name is said to come from a mispronunciation of these two landmarks. It is just under a day's journey by river to the nearest city.

Demographics

Everyone in Quackerly Green is a Brugen, as it is a Brugen settlement.   Brugen pride themselves on being sophisticated thinkers. Quackerly Green is home to several philosophers and a well-known painter, as well as several aspiring artists. The average age of the inhabitants is 30 years old, trending slightly older than the average age for the planet.

Government

Quackerly Green sits in Eidershire and as a result, is governed by the Eidershire Council. The nearest police station is two villages over in River Green. There is also a local doctor who visits from River Green twice a week.   Within the village itself is the Quackerly Green Preservation Society. They pride themselves on the upkeep of the village and can often be seen telling people when their grass is getting too long or if their front door needs a good lick of paint. The QGPS is made up of three long-term members, who have all lived in the village their whole lives. The eldest, a woman well into her forties, is simply known as Lady Mip, and prides herself on three things; never having been sick a day in her life, never having left the village, having the best rosehip jam at the annual village fête.

Districts

The village consists of three main roads;
River Waddle - Runs along the river

Green Lane - From Green Hill to the river

Rosemary Drive - From Quickerly to the river

Guilds & Factions

There are several groups and factions within Quackerly Green, including:
  • Quackerly Green Thinkers
    An amateur philosophy society
  • Quackerly Green Mothers for Paint
A mothers group for the acquisition of painting supplies for hatchlings
  • Quackerly Green Swim and Sup
A social group which meets twice weekly for a Group Swim and Stone Sup

History

The village is thought to be one of the oldest settlements in the whole of Trapip, and references to it can be found in the early census dating back over 3,000 years. There is also a famous poem that references the village which dates from approximately 2,000 years ago, although the exact date and author have been forgotten with time.
...wind blows,
To Quackerly Green and these pastures new.
Brambles and hawthorn, rosehip, gorse and those
Roughend edged grasses all covered with dew...
The poem isn't very good, but it is popular with the inhabitants of the village, and many choose to name their houses after the plants listed, leading to a lot of confusion for the Greenbury postmaster when they visit 3 days a week.

Points of Interest

There are two points of local interest in Quackerly Green, although few take the time to visit them.

The Bridge

The bridge over the Eider River in Quackerly Green is one of only five crossing points for the river for those choosing to travel by land. The river is over 200 miles long, but land travel is unusual enough to make these bridges more worthy of note as unusual remnants of a bygone age, rather than integral pieces of infrastructure.   This bridge is particularly noteworthy for the unusual dedication, which states that it was "Built for Mavis". No one knows who or what Mavis was.

Brambly Cottage

Not to be mistaken with Bramble Cottage or Brambly Farm, Brambly Cottage is the birthplace of Duke Poppopplap-Kanpippippippipblop, the inventor of the Brugen Philosophical School of Thought known as Splash Theory which stated "what matters is not the sound a splash makes, if no one is there to hear it, but the impact of the splash after it occurred". This was later countered by the Anti-Splash Theory, which posited that regardless of the impact of the splash, what caused it in the first place was worthy of consideration.

I love Quackerly Green. Reminds me of some of the older villages in England, for sure. I like the details that the doctor visits from a neighbouring town and the postman doesn't come every day. I would love to visit and sit by the river and hopefully not be called a nuisance by the QGPS.   Also I love Lady Mip.

Definitely inspired by a few places I know. But just so you know, everyone is a nuisance to the QGPS. XD
