An Interview with Hali Shajara

Are you a morning person, or more of a night owl?
I delight in the night life. Sleep is not required for elves, although I have tried it with a little alchemical help.
What’s the first thing you notice about a person when you meet them?
Choice of perfume, and how it interacts with their natural musk. I keep all my senses sharp through practice.
You see a huge spider in your room, what do you do?
I do dabble a little in some Drow harvest techniques.
If you could go back and change one decision you made in the past, what would you change?
I don’t like to form regrets, though I suppose there is an erstwhile mentor of mine for whom I might have pushed for an execution verdict instead of merely banishment - the follies of youth.
Tell me about your first kiss.
I had the good fortune to come of age in a social circle with a great many willing and beautiful options. I think I started experimenting in my mid 80s, and progressed rather quickly.
Do you give people second chances?
I wouldn’t let a present grudge preclude the possibility of future ecstasy.
Are you a cat person or a dog person?
Never been one for dependants, but the servants do keep some cats around, and I respect them.
Do you think you’re attractive?
I take a certain amount of pride in my ability to maintain it.
What’s your worst habit?
[chuckles] …perhaps we should just categorise them all under ‘indulgence’.
When was the last time you cried?
Oh, it’s quite a regular occurrence. All sensations are made to be felt, are they not?
Are you a good liar?
I may have developed a knack for it, over a few dozen years of practice.
What’s your biggest pet peeve?
Oh, prudes and ascetics get on my nerves; I don’t think that’s a secret.
Have you ever had your heart broken?
Certainly, yes. But I am fortunately a practitioner of kintsugi, the art of golden repair.
Are you more likely to use your fists or your words in an argument?
I’ve been known to enjoy a little rough and tumble in both, although my words are the more refined.
What’s something you’re naturally good at?
Like many from the great elven families I have quite an innate talent for magic.
What’s something you had to work hard to be good at?
My current position owes a lot to a great deal of diplomatic effort, which certainly didn’t come overnight.
Can you tell when someone is flirting with you?
It’s one of my most fluent languages.
Do you think money can buy happiness?
Very certainly, applied correctly.
Do you believe in destiny?
Some ancient elven wisdom teaches that everything is written in the song of the stars.
Are you a good cook?
Oh, I’ve been adequate, but it’s quite a long time since I had need to cook for myself.
What do you think happens after you die?
Why, no need to have a stance on that just yet, at only these years.
Did you have to grow up fast?
Not at all, by fortune; I’ve been able to savour it so far.
Who do you look up to?
Oh, I come from a long timeline of exemplary Shajaras.
When you go to a tavern, what do you order?
When I go to a tavern, I buy out the tavern, and that way I can sample whatever they have at my ease.
What do you like most about yourself?
That I live my life to the fullest.
What do you like least about yourself?
Oh, there are a few imperfections, but I don’t like to dwell on them.
Do you want kids someday?
Certainly, certainly, we’ll get to that in time.
Are you a planner or more spontaneous?
There is often greater joy in spontaneity, although my position requires a little planning.
Can you keep a secret?
Certainly; I have enough of my own.
Do you like being the centre of attention?
I don’t tend to feel the need to seek it out, but it is an experience I enjoy.
If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?
I w- …ah, I suppose I would produce an heir, of course.
Do you enjoy getting all dressed up for a special occasion?
I wouldn’t dream of wearing anything but the finest clothes, no matter the occasion.
Where do you feel safe?
We have put a great amount of effort into ensuring the Shajara estate is as safe and secure an environment as there can be - allows for a greater freedom of activity within it.
Do you love or hate being alone?
I’m more than capable of happily occupying myself alone if required.
What’s the last nightmare you remember having?
Oh, I think my dreams would be a little vivid for your ears, as I’m sure you must appreciate.
Do you admit to mistakes when you make them?
Why bother?
Do you want to grow up to be like your parents?
Haha, oh… well, not quite.
How do you deal with being sick? Are you stoic or super whiney?
Oh, I have more than enough ways to remain healthy and vigorous.
What did your parents expect from you when you were born?
[chuckles] I’m sure they expected something like this.
Do you have a strong sense of style?
I think that’s rather well agreed upon.
Would you rather camp outdoors or stay the night in an inn?
Most certainly the inn; I believe I am known to be a man of comforts.
Is there a food that most people like but you absolutely hate?
Not at all. Perhaps the reverse, if anything.
Are you more of a hoarder or a minimalist?
Certainly a keeper of many things; we do make the most of the capacity offered by our estate.
Are you superstitious?
Oh, there is far more in the stars and the voids between than can ever be dreamt of by even the most open minds.
Are you the kind of person who remembers people’s birthdays and pet’s names and stuff?
Ah, I find my mind is so often inclined elsewhere; I maintain servants for that.
What do you do to feel better when you’re sad?
Oh, I have a great many concoctions at my disposal for all kinds of desired mood change.
Is it hard for you to trust someone?
I don’t know that I fully trust anyone except my wife - and, of course, the stars.
Are you susceptible to peer pressure?
I don’t think I could ever have been called a conformist.
If you decided to stop adventuring and settle down, what kind of job would you take?
There are certain much-demanded substances I think I have all the necessary experience to source and sell.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Ha - Immortal, and eternally young. Don’t we all?
