An Interview with Victor Dargent-Laureat

Are you a morning person, or more of a night owl?
I rouse myself early, to make the most of the day.
What’s the first thing you notice about a person when you meet them?
Clothing. Signet rings. Any markers of wealth.
You see a huge spider in your room, what do you do?
I have a very strict talk with the staff.
If you could go back and change one decision you made in the past, what would you change?
Ooh. I - No, wait, I - Ah, bear with me, I’ll find it - There’s one, somewhere, that changes everything…
Tell me about your first kiss.
Certainly not. I mean… obviously, it was my wife.
Do you give people second chances?
Never. Unless I need them.
Are you a cat person or a dog person?
I… might like either, were they only less financially wasteful.
Do you think you’re attractive?
I think I cut something of a dashing figure, yes.
What’s your worst habit?
I have… jumped to unhelpful courses of action through over-eagerness on certain occasions.
When was the last time you cried?
No business of yours! I haven’t. I don’t. Very long ago.
Are you a good liar?
A preposterous question. I won’t say.
What’s your biggest pet peeve?
Jokes. I can’t abide jokes.
Have you ever had your heart broken?
…no. Who told you that?
Are you more likely to use your fists or your words in an argument?
Certainly not fists. Far too vulgar. Not my own, anyway.
What’s something you’re naturally good at?
Commitment.
What’s something you had to work hard to be good at?
Level-headedness, I suppose.
Can you tell when someone is flirting with you?
……yes. I choose not to say.
Do you think money can buy happiness?
Certainly.
Do you believe in destiny?
I certainly believe in my own.
Are you a good cook?
What? No.
What do you think happens after you die?
I expect to live in wealth in the Garden, with my dynasty.
Did you have to grow up fast?
Well, I mean, I was born the heir, so, you know…
Who do you look up to?
My father, the Vizier Dargent.
When you go to a tavern, what do you order?
Tea. Green. Venison if I’m eating.
What do you like most about yourself?
I cannot be faulted for loyalty.
What do you like least about yourself?
I do wish I had a greater… presence, I suppose.
Do you want kids someday?
It’s a requirement.
Are you a planner or more spontaneous?
I plan. I try.
Can you keep a secret?
Without question.
Do you like being the centre of attention?
It gives me a chance to prove myself.
If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?
Goodness. A single day to produce an heir? I may need to visit an alchemist.
Do you enjoy getting all dressed up for a special occasion?
It’s satisfying to have everything perfectly in place.
Where do you feel safe?
Wherever I’m in charge.
Do you love or hate being alone?
It does tend to invite too many distracting thoughts.
What’s the last nightmare you remember having?
Quite a dreadful one where I revealed myself by accident and destroyed the family. Who didn’t take kindly, of course.
Do you admit to mistakes when you make them?
I have to. My parents will know.
Do you want to grow up to be like your parents?
Fervently.
How do you deal with being sick? Are you stoic or super whiney?
I detest sickness, and will make my displeasure known.
What did your parents expect from you when you were born?
Surely that I would bring pride to the family and security to our lineage. I am working on it.
Do you have a strong sense of style?
I have taken notes.
Would you rather camp outdoors or stay the night in an inn?
What lunatic camps out of doors? There’s… insects.
Is there a food that most people like but you absolutely hate?
I confess I cannot stomach fois gras, no matter how many times I try.
Are you more of a hoarder or a minimalist?
Minimalism seems more… elegant.
Are you superstitious?
It doesn’t do to tempt fortune.
Are you the kind of person who remembers people’s birthdays and pet’s names and stuff?
I… try.
What do you do to feel better when you’re sad?
I read. I drink tea. I get a servant to read poetry while I write reports.
Is it hard for you to trust someone?
My station is such that most cannot be trusted.
Are you susceptible to peer pressure?
I prefer to think of it as social engineering.
If you decided to stop adventuring and settle down, what kind of job would you take?
I suppose some kind of… accountant? A clerk? I could work for my grandfather…
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Successful.
