An Interview with Voltaire

Are you a morning person, or more of a night owl?
I was nocturnal, to begin with. I am less so now.
What’s the first thing you notice about a person when you meet them?
Smell. Especially if it’s fear.
You see a huge spider in your room, what do you do?
Food.
If you could go back and change one decision you made in the past, what would you change?
Hmm. Keep closer watch on the Viziera’s sister’s kit.
Tell me about your first kiss.
[snarls] Try it.
Do you give people second chances?
Nope.
Are you a cat person or a dog person?
I can’t speak to cats, but most of the dogs are imbeciles.
Do you think you’re attractive?
Sleek and glittery, just like my patron.
What’s your worst habit?
Sometimes I leave bones on the floor. The servants don’t like.
When was the last time you cried?
I don’t.
Are you a good liar?
Yes.
What’s your biggest pet peeve?
Rabbits.
Have you ever had your heart broken?
Not that sentimental.
Are you more likely to use your fists or your words in an argument?
Don’t have either. Scream and bite.
What’s something you’re naturally good at?
Getting around and finding things out.
What’s something you had to work hard to be good at?
Even once my patron awoke me, it took time to live in a house.
Can you tell when someone is flirting with you?
Yes, they bark.
Do you think money can buy happiness?
Yes. Obviously.
Do you believe in destiny?
No, just deals.
Are you a good cook?
[unimpressed stare]
What do you think happens after you die?
I go to my patron until the Viziera calls me back into a new body. If she dies too, the fox part of me is released to the Garden, and the Rich Man keeps the rest.
Did you have to grow up fast?
Slowly and then all at once.
Who do you look up to?
I respect my Viziera. I admire my patron more.
When you go to a tavern, what do you order?
They know I drink milk. Or water with a little wine.
What do you like most about yourself?
Even for a fox, I am cunning.
What do you like least about yourself?
Still must rely on Viziera for judging wealth. The fox brain cannot get it.
Do you want kids someday?
I have some descendants in the lower places. I might again.
Are you a planner or more spontaneous?
A secret.
Can you keep a secret?
What I’m for.
Do you like being the centre of attention?
Only for brushing.
If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?
Take to the streets. Find a body I like, and take him to the Viziera.
Do you enjoy getting all dressed up for a special occasion?
[snarls] Watch it. I’ll bite.
Where do you feel safe?
Most of the court. Especially my Viziera’s house.
Do you love or hate being alone?
Nice to wander.
What’s the last nightmare you remember having?
…sometimes the old life comes back when I sleep. Hungry. Running. A snare.
Do you admit to mistakes when you make them?
Only to the Viziera.
Do you want to grow up to be like your parents?
Dead? No.
How do you deal with being sick? Are you stoic or super whiney?
Whine. Whine to the Viziera.
What did your parents expect from you when you were born?
Maybe to die like two sisters the year before. Maybe to live to make more little kits of my own.
Do you have a strong sense of style?
I glitter.
Would you rather camp outdoors or stay the night in an inn?
If it were up to me: day in an inn, night outdoors.
Is there a food that most people like but you absolutely hate?
I like food.
Are you more of a hoarder or a minimalist?
Have some bone caches.
Are you superstitious?
I’m sure it looks like that. My patron guides.
Are you the kind of person who remembers people’s birthdays and pet’s names and stuff?
No. At least not their names as you would know them.
What do you do to feel better when you’re sad?
I get brushed.
Is it hard for you to trust someone?
Don’t.
Are you susceptible to peer pressure?
No.
If you decided to stop adventuring and settle down, what kind of job would you take?
If the Viziera dies, and her family goes with her, I suppose I would have to become a crime lord.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
Alive. No more. I wasn’t awake then.
