An Interview with Warren Furr

Are you a morning person, or more of a night owl?
Oh, morning. Although I can forget to go to bed until late if I’m tinkering.
What’s the first thing you notice about a person when you meet them?
Their volume. I prefer it when they’re quiet.
You see a huge spider in your room, what do you do?
Move sharp tools where they won’t hurt the wee thing and leave it to its web. Silent crafters are welcome in my workshop.
If you could go back and change one decision you made in the past, what would you change?
I once accidentally helped one of my sons create a long-range buzz saw that I somewhat regret….
Tell me about your first kiss.
…um, what do you want to know? It was nice. I liked it.
Do you give people second chances?
Second chances at what? Not really, I suppose.
Are you a cat person or a dog person?
Not really, no. Although dogs are less appreciated than cats.
Do you think you’re attractive?
I think that’s for the Prince of Rabbits to determine… and my wife, of course.
What’s your worst habit?
Some would say absentmindedness, but they can’t see in my mind. It’s actually quite focused in here - just on the things that interest me.
When was the last time you cried?
I’m not sure. Maybe a few months ago. At… um, what-her-name’s promotion in the Brambleknights. That was a nice day.
Are you a good liar?
I don’t expect I would be. No.
What’s your biggest pet peeve?
Noise. We have Earspeak for a reason, you know?
Have you ever had your heart broken?
I don’t think so. But if I ever did, it would be interesting to see if it could be fixed mechanically.
Are you more likely to use your fists or your words in an argument?
I don’t argue. I retreat to my workshop before it comes to that.
What’s something you’re naturally good at?
Tinkering. Especially with clockwork.
What’s something you had to work hard to be good at?
Talking to people never comes easy. Even when it’s just the ears.
Can you tell when someone is flirting with you?
Um… signs would point to no.
Do you think money can buy happiness?
I’m happiest in my workshop. And most of the tools and materials in there weren’t exactly… bought.
Do you believe in destiny?
I trust the Bramble Church when they tell us to follow the Prince of Rabbit’s path through the thicket.
Are you a good cook?
I am. Best cook I’ve ever tasted anyway. Although in time… what’s-his-name will perhaps surpass me.
What do you think happens after you die?
I’ll join Brambleson in the Briarpatch of course. I hope it’s peaceful.
Did you have to grow up fast?
I was fifteen when we had our first kid. A little younger than some, I suppose, but I didn’t have much to do with the birthing. Or, for that matter, the kid. She’s turned out okay though… she’s um, doing… something productive, I think.
Who do you look up to?
I tend to keep my head down, to be completely honest. Less call for conversation that way.
When you go to a tavern, what do you order?
I don’t really, by personal choice. Although Winnie did take me to one of the dwarven taverns further up in the city one time. Never again. She’s lucky I love her so much.
What do you like most about yourself?
I’m a dedicated worker.
What do you like least about yourself?
I often give up on things that I find hard on the first go.
Do you want kids someday?
I have many children. Winnie and the Church expect that we will have a few more before too long. She’s been right all the other times.
Are you a planner or more spontaneous?
Neither, I suppose. I’m a rabbit of routine but I don’t really plan things out.
Can you keep a secret?
I’m not much of a conversationalist. So I suppose I could do - yes.
Do you like being the centre of attention?
Very much not.
If you knew you were going to die tomorrow, what would you do today?
There’s a clockwork wheelbarrow I’m currently working on that I’d quite like to finish before I die.
Do you enjoy getting all dressed up for a special occasion?
I enjoy dressing nicely for Berryfest, which is fun, if a bit tiring.
Where do you feel safe?
In my workshop.
Do you love or hate being alone?
Oh, I love it. But it’s frowned upon to be too alone. Rabbits are meant to be social creatures.
What’s the last nightmare you remember having?
That buzz saw I was talking about earlier. Yeah, that. And lots of sand. And teeth.
Do you admit to mistakes when you make them?
I would, but I prefer to keep them to myself.
Do you want to grow up to be like your parents?
They were more… outgoing than I am. That might have made things a little easier for me.
How do you deal with being sick? Are you stoic or super whiney?
Winnie hates whiners. I take to my workshop where I can grumble in peace.
What did your parents expect from you when you were born?
I think they expected I would be more involved with the Church. But I don’t like crowds. I still attend all the evening services. It would be unthinkable not to.
Do you have a strong sense of style?
That’s more Winnie’s department, although she did find me these lovely goggles that keep my eyes safe when I’m crafting.
Would you rather camp outdoors or stay the night in an inn?
I’d prefer to stay at home. I like to be comfy. But no inns. Not after last time.
Is there a food that most people like but you absolutely hate?
I prefer my food a little more flavourful than most. Winnie brings me back paprika from the dwarves. They don’t grow that in the Tangle.
Are you more of a hoarder or a minimalist?
I think minimalism is quite un-Brambelite to be completely honest.
Are you superstitious?
I’ll believe what the Brers tell us. They actually research that stuff. I make clocks.
Are you the kind of person who remembers people’s birthdays and pet’s names and stuff?
Pet’s names?! I don’t even remember my kids' names! We thought it would be easy to follow the bunbun tradition of giving them all names that rhymed. But now we’re running out of names, and I can’t tell one kid apart from another. It’s a bit overwhelming to be honest.
What do you do to feel better when you’re sad?
I go to my workshop and I make something pretty.
Is it hard for you to trust someone?
No. Not really. Unless they’re a canine. Or very loud.
Are you susceptible to peer pressure?
I suppose I am. I certainly didn’t decide to get married and have a dozen children because it was my passion to do so.
If you decided to stop adventuring and settle down, what kind of job would you take?
Adventuring? That’s more Winnie’s thing. I like my life as it is, thanks.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
An inventor. Although I did toy with the idea of becoming a hermit after my second kid was born.
