Hightide

Twice a year, the followers of Whirling-In-Rags, the Queen of the Sea observe Hightide.

History

It is believed that, several pantheons ago, before the Sea had dried up, Hightide was a Water Festival. The original practices of the celebration have been lost to time, although there are several theories - any or all (or none) of which may be accurate. It is thought that "Hightide" occurred when the waters of the Sea were at their deepest, leading some historians and philosophers to believe that there might have been swimming and other water sports involved. Others consider it more likely it was a festival of fish, where the boats of the sailors were able to come into land and share their catch. Perhaps cleansing rituals were involved, with the water symbolising washing and rejuvination. Or possibly bathing helped the celebrators cool down from the desert heat, if the desert even existed at all back then.   The origin of the festival may be forever forgotten other than to Whirling-In-Rags herself. More recently it has become a day of reflection and mourning. Participants remember their passed loved ones, and contemplate on what has and will be lost as the city sinks deeper into the sand.
