True Name

Name of a thing or being that expresses its true nature. Knowledge of a True Name allows one to affect another person or being vitally. Knowing someone's, or something's, name therefore gives the person (who knows the name) power over them. The name of a spirit inscribed on a talisman is legible only to supernatural beings and gives a sort of temporary "control" over the entity whose name is possessed. Merely speaking a being's name is sometimes enough to repel or call it.   A deity's name is so potent that its invocation confers upon the speaker tremendous power over their creations. To prevent abuse of this power, as well as to avoid blasphemy, the true name of a deity is so taboo that their High Priest is supposedly the only individual who can speak it aloud — and then only in the holiest of rituals. Deity's and other beings of authority can confer a true name upon a lesser being, granting them power of their own.   Different organizations, who know about true names and their power, refer to them by various titles. The Church of the Great Mother calls it a Halo. The Colacho call it a Crown. The Ban Fellowship calls it a Brand. And the Druid Circles call it a Totem.
