Campaign 4 - The Black Tide - The Thunder Tower

The session begins with the party aboard Captain Tsunami's ship, the Aurora, en route to the Thunder Tower to search for Tsunami's missing lover, Billiam. Billiam, the captain of the Jade Lion, was last seen transporting Steerian merchants. Mind Claw their God Tiger explains how he hates water and is eager to return home to Sporemound.   Shortly into their voyage, they come across a ship sinking under the assault of a black sludge-like creature, presumed to be the Black Tide. The Steerians on board are caught between firing cannons at the creature and saving their valuable cargo from plummeting into the Sea of Stars. Amidst the chaos, a young merfolk girl, not older than ten, frantically signals to the party for help, while a spectral figure resembling Jack hovers behind her. Alarmingly, the Jade Lion is seen fleeing the scene. Driven by their heroism, the party decides to rescue the survivors of the doomed ship while Edith's owl followed the fleeing Jade Lion.   They manage to fend off the black oozes and rescue two Steerian merchants, Annalee and Zohn, along with Kai, the young merfolk girl. Cor also managed to capture some of the black tide into 2 large Jars. Kai, unable to speak the party's language, shows recognition when she sees Jack's tattoo, repeatedly exclaiming "Father!" while pointing at it, and calling Jack "Friend." The connection is mysterious: does Jack have a merfolk child, or is he perhaps a friend of Kai’s father? Intriguingly, Kai possesses a glowing necklace that the Black Tide seemed desperate to consume, bearing the same markings as the crown and armor discovered in the sewers. Could there be a connection between these items?
Continuing their journey toward the Thunder Tower, the party, through Edith's psychic connection with her owl, discovers a secret illusionary passage beneath the tower where the Jade Lion had docked. However, instead of finding Billiam, they encounter Blue Hood thieves who reveal that they use the island as a base for raiding merchant ships at sea. They also learn that the island's lighthouse is operated by a tribe of Gerblins, led by an individual named "Zanazar." Zanazar allows the Blue Hood to stay in exchange for goods and occasional human sacrifices. The Blue Hood then proposition the party, offering Billiam's ship, the Jade Lion, as a reward if they help eliminate the Gerblins. They inform the party that Billiam was recently handed over to the Gerblins, suggesting urgency if they wish to rescue him.   As the party delves deeper into the island, they liberate several prisoners from the Gerblin jail cells, including two more Steerian merchants (one eaten by Mindclaw), Billiam's first mate Scabs, and a water elemental named Aquafina, who is revealed to be Cor Lapis' sister. Aquafina, sharing Cor Lapis' mission to eradicate world suffering, reacts to the sight of Jack's arm, which is carved with the name "SCARLET." She then absorbs the pain and scars from Jack, transferring them to her own aquatic form.   Cor also showed Aquafina his jar of black tide and she attempted to purify it by melding it with her body. She said it was full of hate and pain and she then passed out from the experience. Cor scooped her up in a large bottle and carried her for the remainder of the journey.
They fought off the Gerblins, who were fused with lightning rods and numerous mechanical devices, and uncovered the tale of Zanazar and Selene.   Zanazar, a brotherhood pirate and skilled mechanical engineer, met his fate eight years prior when raiders attacked his ship, casting him out to sea where he was presumed dead. He washed ashore near a lighthouse, where he was nursed back to health by the keeper, a woman named Selene. The two fell in love, and Zanazar employed his mechanical prowess to repair the lighthouse. However, Selene harbored a secret: she was a thunder dragon in human guise, known as Stormscale. Tragedy struck when pirates invaded the lighthouse, slaying Stormscale and Zanazar and pilfering the dragon's magical compass that led to an ancient treasure.   Refusing to succumb to his demise, Zanazar's spirit lingered in the mortal realm, transforming into a fiend. He leveraged his scientific knowledge to construct a mechanical dragon in the image of his beloved, using her horn to channel lightning atop the lighthouse for power. He succeeded in drawing her spirit from the ethereal plane, confining it within the mechanical golem.   The party confronted the deranged Zanazar who revealed that Jack was one of the very pirates who killed him and Selene and attacked in the name of vengence. Afterwards using Edith's peformed an exorcism, guiding the doomed lovers' spirits to the spiritual realm where they could finally find peace.
The party located and rescued the Orc Billiam, then returned to the Blue Hoods, who, in turn, restored the Jade Lion to them as agreed upon the Gerblins' defeat. They succeeded in saving one Steerian merchant named Recardo, Scabs, the first mate of the Jade Lion, and a group of Gerblins. These Gerblins now revered Mindclaw as their new deity. With these individuals in tow, the party rejoined Tsunami and continued their journey to the Floating Market.
