Port Tendari

a sizeable town in the Barren Isles of the Nidari Reach.

Demographics

the population of around 5000 is pretty evenly split, being around 60% Bamboo Dowo and 40% Nidari.

History

relatively new, as it only arose since the Greening some 200-odd years ago. potentially could be older, if its status as a safe haven is pre-existing.

Architecture

  • heavy on bamboo
  • high-lines: towers that enable the crossing of the mouth of the lagoon, connecting the two halves of the town without blocking the flow of trade traffic into and out of the lagoon - though of course, skiffs still head back and forth across the waterway. this structure uses Nidari Bell technology in a land setting, with Dowo bamboo-tech to construct the towers. there are two pairs of towers, each higher on one side than the other, to allow a gentle gravity-fed descent along the Bell-tendril and kelp-rope cables.

Geography

Port Tendari is located on the island of Tendari in the Barren Isles.   Tendari island is an atoll several dozen miles across, but only a mile or so thick at its widest point. it encircles a large lagoon in its centre, with only one break in the ring - this is where the Port is set, on either side, with the highlines connecting the two.   the land area is mostly given over to bamboo production, both for food and construction. the low land area relative to population, however, means that most of this supply is used locally and little is exported.   instead, the local populace relies on the sea, both surrounding and surrounded, for their livelihoods. the interior lagoon is rich with sealife of all kinds.   the local apex beast is the amphibious, omnivorous Pandorca, a deadly cross between panda bear and killer whale.

Natural Resources

  • bamboo
possible centre-island resource:
  • Pandorca? perhaps a particular breed is produced here - hunters? warbeasts? shorebeasts?
  • some pharmacological resource or delicacy?
  • a storm-proof safe haven? this is the best idea really. could also be proof against pirates and military raids? perhaps there are escalating tensions at certain times, when defence rates are hiked?
