Ancient obelisk

In the land of Civallia stands a stone obelisk. It has been there for as long as anyone can remember but its purpose has been lost to time. Standing at about 10 foot tall it is covered in runes carved into it's surface, in a language no one living knows. Made from a strange smooth and shiny black material, which shimmers with a silvery sheen as the light moves across it's surface.

No moss or plants grow upon or around it and it is impervious to damage. It is bitterly cold to the touch and emits a strange, soft humming tone. Magic users from around the world have attempted to discern it's purpose, but so far it's mysteries have eluded them. Any magic used upon it seems to slip off it's surface like water upon oil.

Those who have slept in it's shadow speak of their dreams being filled with strange whispers and shadowy figures flitting at the corners of their vision. A strange alien mind stroking the surface of their thoughts which, though disturbing, brings no sense of fear.
