The Dark Column
The Dark Column is perhaps one of the most secure prisons on Pangea. Actually not perhaps. It is THE most secure prison.
Deep within the heart of The Dominion's Domain, it is used to house not one, not two, but three S Class Demon Beasts on the top level of the Tower.
The Dark Column Emits an auora of horror and desolation. The closer one gets to the structure, the stronger those feelings become. Nothing grows within 10 miles of the Column. The soil is barren, the rivers and lakes are poisoned, filled with unknown toxins. It is always night time near the Column and the season is always a snowless winter.
Purpose / Function
The Dark Column serves two purposes.
1) A prison for the Dominus Prime's political enemies/rivals.
2) A Prison to hold Three S Class demon beasts who had terrorized the Domain 1000 years prior.
Alterations
A Gladitorial Arena was added during Hadrian Zayzar The Third's reign. This included an area to house all the prisoners that were used as gladiators, cages and cells for the Demon Beasts the gladiators fought, and housing for the Prison Staff.
Architecture
The Column is made of a black Rock known only as Absorption Stone. This is because it absorbs energy very well, especially magic. It can be used in spells and rituals as a means to absorb extra energy or as a defensive measure.
The Column is a whopping 100 Miles High, with each floor becoming more and more dangerous the higher up one goes. There are 1,000 Floors of different sizes in total.
The lower levels are where all the guards live. Their housing, kitchen, baths and communal areas were all on the lower floors.
The Middle Levels are where the prisoners are kept. It is also where they fight for their survival and Freedom.
The second to last floor is where the Warden Stays. His main job is to make sure the S class Beasts are secured at all times, no matter what else is happening. The current Warden is Hadrian, who happens to be the Dominus Prime.
The last floor is where the 3 S Class Beasts are sealed and kept locked away.
History
During the Dominion's Second Golden Age, they were faced with a Huge Horde of Demon Beasts gathering at their borders.
Led by 3 S Class Beats, the Great Horde invaded the Domain and wreaked havoc. Pushed to the brink, The Dominus Prime of that time period Hadrian the Second and his two sons Pontus the Axe, and Nijel The Black, fought against the horde, wiping most of the lower ranked beasts out. With their combined efforts they were able to wound the S class beasts severely enough to allow them to be sealed and imprisoned in a tower of their making.
Even sealed and imprisoned, their powers were leaking into the outside world, causing the Dominion to have a very large problem with Demon Beasts at their Borders for the next 500 years.
When Hadrian the Third was born 700 years after the Column was built, his Father Augustus, had begun to use the Column as a means of punishment for his enemies. When Hadrian came to power, he used it as a way to create a large and continuous Nexus of death energy.
Prior to Hadrian's reign, death in the Column was a foreign conclusion. However Hadrian created a rule that said that anyone who made it to the 998th Floor would be set free. However, there could only be one person a year, and each prisoner had to fight their way up. Sometimes the competitors were fellow prisoners. Other times the enemy were Demon Beasts.
Every floor past 500 up to 900 is filled with roaming A Class Demon Beasts, who are allowed to do as they please.
Starting On Floor 900 resides the strongest and most lethal Prisoners and Prison Guards.
In the history of the Column, there has only been 10 people to be set free. They have gone on to become very rich on the outside.
The Column earned it's Nickname from the Fact that He was the first Warden after adding the Competitve aspect to it. Hadrian is a necromancer who uses all the death in the Column to power himself. He was known to make climbing the Column extremely difficult, even cheating at times to make sure more and more people died.
With such a huge Concentration of death energy in one place, it has made it impossible for fauna or wildlife to exist near the tower. The closer one gets, the more fear and dread filled their hearts. Even the most powerful in the Dominion tended to avoid going there, unless they had business with Hadrian.
