Fairchild's Dogs

Thimys Fairchild made the long walk deep into The Vaults, to a small room only he knew about. Shelves filled every wall while a reading table and chair sat near a lamp on a decorative pole.
He moved to the back wall and followed it to the corner. Two brownstone eggs covered with carved runes rested on a shelf about level with his chest.   "It has been decided. My grandson has been chosen to be Keeper after me," he told the eggs. Clearing his throat, he continued. "But he is still a child. I fear things are coming to a head and I will not have time to teach him everything he needs to know."   The eggs just sat there.   "I need you two to keep him safe. You will have to use your own judgements. I will not always be there for you or for him."
Thimys sucked in a worried breath.   "I love that boy," his voice cracked and he cleared his throat. "I would give ANYTHING for this to not fall upon him, but that is not possbile. I beg of you two to accept the burden of life to protect him."   Flashes of blue, green, red, and purple danced through the runes otherwise hidden on the eggs.   "Yes, he will play your games and figure out your tricks to hatching," Thimys smiled and picked up the eggs. "I just won't tell him it's a game."

Enter The Gur

Fawkes L. H. Fairchild spend a year researching through The Vaults before discovering that the eggs were a puzzles but actual eggs that could be hatched. He spent another year exploring even deeper into the Vaults before leanring how to hatch them.   When they did hatch, all his reading of scrolls and old dustly tomes failed to prepare him for the wonderous joy that filled him when a rolypoly male puppy came out of each egg. He fell instantly in love and pulled both puppies to him ina big group hug, laughing as they licked his face.
"I don't care that the scrolls say you already have names," Fawkes told the puppies. "I am learning to be an Acolyte of Boki. She is the goddess of secrets."   He hugged both puppies again.   "I am supposed to keep all this acolyte stuff secret just to be safe," he eventually continued. "You can keep those names as your secrets."   The puppies licked his face, wagging their tails. Fawkes laughed.   "I name you PeyPey and JuJu. Now, let's go show Grandfather how wonderful you are!"
Thimys Fairchild was left speechless when Fawkes presented the two puppies by their new names. That was not the proper way of things with a Gur Dog That the two puppies were very pleased with those names was just as baffling but it also set him at ease. The two had decided to bond with his grandson. His boy would be safe.
