Toskra

These great panther like beasts are actually more closely related to squirrels than cats, and what's more these arboreal creatures are exclusively insectivores. Toskra prey upon the giant insects that densely populate the jungles of Hykano using impersonations of swarming flies. By clinging to the trunk of the massive trees of Hykano and violently shedding their dark but slightly iridescent fur they can easily obscure their true form. But they don't stop there! The roar and growl of a toskra is a pitched and droning vibrato that sounds almost identical to the buzzing of flies, luring in prey even through the dense foliage of their natural environment.

Toskra'ta

The toskra'ta are an deadly and brutally intelligent subset of the species who've actually abandoned their, maul-like tusks in favour of sharpening them to match the razor-like hair they grow. Instead of the carapace armoured prey like giant wasps or dire-beetles hunted by the generic toskra, the toskra'ta play a dangerous game of hungering for creatures far beyond what they could hope to take down on their own. The Hykano jungle is full of terrifyingly dangerous creatures and the toskra are nowhere near the top of that list. Most notably; in the colossal root structures beneath the jungle there is a large population of purple-worm like creatures (known locally as níðhǫggr), and above the jungle canopy roosts an unnamed species of gargantuan eagles thought to be related to rocs.

Ambitious Hunters

The toskra'ta use their bladed tusks to chop away branches and create large clearings in the jungle that go from a hole in the canopy all the way down to the jungle floor. These clearings serve as both home and hunting ground for the toskra'ta. To hunt, they dig down into the root system beneath their clearing and by using their roar to create powerful vibrations and their tusks to transmit the energy into the roots, they can trigger the tremorsense of nearby níðhǫggr. Once a toskra'ta has drawn the attention of a worm it begins a desperate ascent to the canopy, nearly 4 kilometers above. All the while the toskra'ta will continue to aggravate the pursuing wyrm, goading it higher and higher with their droning roar and special pheromones carried on their shed fur. By the time the beast finally succeeds in leading the wyrm to the tree tops, they will almost certainly have alerted the nearest gargantuan eagle who can either finish off the exhausted níðhǫggr or send it falling down to its death. Either way, the toskra'ta will cut off as much of the wyrm's meat for itself as it can while also fending off the eagle. Because despite their symbiotic relationship, the younger gargantuan eagles will sometimes attempt to eat the toskra'ta only to find the beast's razor sharp fur makes them incredibly painful just to hold, let alone swallow. There are even recorded cases of toskra'ta using their natural blades to kill a níðhǫggr from the inside out after being swallowed.   While toskra are largely solitary, it is not uncommon to find a decent number of them that den in close proximity to a toskra'ta's clearing since the remains of the níðhǫggr often attract giant wasps or other such scavengers that the normal toskra can then feast upon.
