Thoron has a long past, involving war, rebellion, independence, and great change. Thoron was born in 836 in a small native kingdom in the outlands. Thoron's history began as a prince in an outlands kingdom. He was born into royalty. Thoron was shown to be a very talented and strong child, and his parents saw great potential in him. After continuing to go out of his way to study to become king for years, he finally became king at 19 when the crown was handed down to him from his father. He ruled effectively in his small kingdom, and hew saw only a bright future ahead. Thoron continued to improve his kingdom. He improved infrastructure, created an advanced aquaduct system, and increased the kingdom's wealth, mostly by increasing mining on the large quantities of painite found below the kingdom. This optimism would be shattered when the Merindian Empire came. The Merindian Empire came to conquer Thoron's kingdom in 861 and offered Thoron two options: integrate into the Merindian Empire and gain protection, access to the whole Merindian Empire's trade network, but have to pay taxes and let the Merindian Empire conscript their population in times of war and access to their natural resources. The other option was to be conquered, and be forced into these terms. Thoron chose to fight instead of surrender, despite knowing how outnumbered he was. The invasion began with Thoron instantly falling back to guerilla tactics, knowing how out-manned and out-gunned he was. He fought for 1 year, but was eventually forced into surrender. Thoron fled his fallen kingdom, ending up in the Merindian Empire's enemy, Regius. With his previous skills as a king, he was offered a place in the government of Regius. He was paid very highly, and soon had build a successful new life in Regius. After slowly rising in the ranks for 5 years he became a governor of a Regian province in the outlands. He lived a comfortable life, but he began to come into conflict with Regian government. He saw that they did not treats the natives of the outlands nearly as well as they did with ethnic Regians. As an outlands native, Thoron could not stand this, and for the next 4 years he campaigned for letting the outlands natives in Regius have equal rights, but he was denied any progress. He continued to directly support his cause, but then Regius decided to have him killed because of the unrest he was causing. Thoron fought off the assassins and began a violent uprising in Regius' outlands territories. This rebellion gained great initial success, and they captured several cities and held them for months, although the rebellion began to be crushed. Thoron realized that his rebellion would fail, and it's supporters would be killed, so he thought of a plan. He ambushed a Regian airship dock and stole several airships, and over the next few months him and other airship captains in his ranks flew his followers in secret to a distant and uninhabited island chain. After his followers were all finally transported, he kept the airships and cut all ties with Regius, and founded his own nation on the islands with his followers, and this nation is Dragnir. After founding Dragnir in 865, Thoron set out to create a small yet powerful country. He immediately began setting up coastal fortresses, sea mines, and anti-air defences across his islands in order to defend the infant nation. Most of the population of Dragnir was made up of highly skilled and hardened rebel fighters, and Thoron knew that he would need to keep his tiny nation strong, and he needed to increase his population. He made an offer to the world: anyone can join his country, but they must be highly skilled in at least 2 practical skills, and they also must be willing to fight to the death for the nation in times of war. This brought in thousands of new citizens, and his nation continued to grow, eventually growing to 13,000 people by 875. During this time Dragnir founded many military bases on neighbouring continents, and numbers stations were also set up to transmit and receive encoded messages. In 875 Dragnir faced it's first significant threat: a Regian invasion. Regius came with 100,000 men, intending to completely destroy Dragnir and kill Thoron. They offered the leave the Dragnirian people unharmed, if only they handed in Thoron into Regian custody. Thoron left it for his people to decide, and they unanimously voted to fight rather then let their leader die. The invasion began with the Regians attempting to attack Dragnir from the air, but none of their planes or airships could get close to the islands, as Dragnir's ocean fortresses shot them all down. These fortresses were eventually destroyed, and the Regian invasion advanced towards the island. They attempted 4 landings on the islands, yet all were beaten back. They then attempted to carpet bomb Dragnir's fortress cities, but were fought back by Dragnir's highly skilled fighter pilots. They finally were able to land on Dragnir's main island and began attacking forts and burning croplands, and trying to cause as much damage as possible. They also tried to find civilians to attack, but strangely could not find any. The Regians then finally discovered the depth of Dragnir's defence when their tanks were being destroyed by mines that appeared seemingly out of nowhere, and it was eventually realized that the Dragnirians were hiding in secret tunnels deep below the earth, and performing secret raids at night. These hit and run tactics the Dragnirians were using were quickly overwhelming the Regians, but that's when the final battle began. Dragnirian forces finally rallied as one large force, and during the early hours of the day assaulted the Regian's main base, killing about 12,000 as well as destroying many tanks, planes, and even a few airships. After hearing about this defeat, the Regian generals were forced to retreat off the island. This genius defence was a total success, and it brought great fame and respect to the young nation of Dragnir. Their small army of 13,000 defeated a much greater force of 100,000, and this proved how effective their small elite army really was. This brought in even more citizens to Thoron's country, and currently the country has a population of 20,000 people.
