Smolder Dish

A small, flat dish made of metal, with a flint and small spoon attached on a chain. When the people of Dairy trade food, feed, and other edibles, the traders will take a small sample to burn on a smolder dish to ensure that they are not contaminated by the Wasting Disease.

Utility

Buyers and sellers of goods within Dairy all carry a smolder dish with them to any trade. Small samples are taken from the product being sold, put on the smolder dish and lit on fire. Due to the nature of the Wasting Disease, any product that has been contaminated will release a foul odor when burnt. Contaminated food is immediately sequestered by the town council's representatives for destruction, and investigators will be sent to examine the source of the food.   There have been cases of a buyer contaminiating their smolder dish to produce an odor to get out of a deal, so both parties will often test the product if there is little trust within their business relationship.
Inventor(s)
Reinhart "Ram" Gregory and Simon Chesterton developed the idea of burning samples of food after they discovered the foul stench that occured in all items that had been contaminated and identified as the cause of the Wasting Disease.
Access & Availability
Smolder dishes are widely available in Dairy, and are known to the external traders that work with the people of Dairy. They are often made by apprentice metalsmiths to practice their trade. Fancier dishes, with additional enscriptions, blessings, decorations and runes are available from fine establishments.
