Spirits of the Caseiculture

The Spirits of the Caseiculture are the beings that assist with the production of the fine cheeses that come out of Dairy, and have become the general belief of the area.   There are two types of spirits:
  • Spirits of Curd - these spirits oversee creation of things, such as births, cheese, and plants. The Spirits of Curd encourage growth and progress. The name of Curdology comes from the belief that growth and production are the best things that can be achieved in life.
  • Spirits of Whey - these spirts oversee the destruction of things, and ensuring that the destruction is turned into a nutrient for the new to grow in. Just like they whey from making cheese is used to suppliment farmer's meals, or the dung from cattle can be used to fertilize crops, the Spirits of Whey lay out the groundwork for future growth using the waste from decay. The name of the Wheylings comes from the belief that they are the raw materials that will nurture and improve the Society as a whole.
Originally, the Curdologists of each household kept distinct beliefs about the nature of the spirits. Some families thought there was one spirit with two faces of Curd and Whey that transitioned over the seasons. Other families believed that there were multiple sprites of each type that could be appeased through various rituals and cantrips.   Since the formalization of the Curdologists into The Society of Cheesemeisters, family stories have been gathered and categorized in the Cheese Cellar. However, the Affineurs and Cheesemeisters still generally believe in what their own families believed about the nature of the Spirits. There is a belief that the right Cheesemesiter needs to come along to fully understand the nature of the Caseiculture, but that has not occured yet.   The Spirits like to keep the people of Dairy guessing about their nature. They think it is fun.

Holidays

Birthing Season - people will leave out devotions to Curd to encourage plant growth, happy and easy births, bountiful starts of families and businesses, and other blessings. Day of Last Crop - people gather the dead crops at the first frost and ask for blessings from Whey as they add the waste to their compost piles. Even shopkeepers in town have a small compost bin to ensure they can recieve blessing from Whey.
