Chronicler’s Luck and Inspiration

Chronicler’s Luck

At session start, players have an opportunity to summarize the last session's action. Particularly descriptive or comprehensive summaries may net the group additional rerolls. These persist for the session following the summary only and do not accumulate. This reroll functions like a luck point from the Lucky feat, and is invoked at the agreement of a majority of the party.

Inspired Play

In order to encourage the players to "take big swings" each player character will start a new session with inspiration.

Inspiration and Reroll Limits and Guidelines

In the interest of being consistent, here are things players should keep in mind about using Chronicler's Luck or character inspiration:
  • These can be used on Initiative since it's considered an ability check.
  • When these are used to grant advantage (or a reroll of a flat roll), they can enable sneak attack (or other situations that require rolling with advantage). If they are used to cancel disadvantage, they do not have this effect.
  • Players can see their die roll (but may not necessarily know whether it’s a success or not) and choose to use their additional die (or dice) before finding out the result.
  • Effects that allow rolling additional dice (advantage, luck, inspiration, etc.) are officially capped at a total of 3 dice rolled for a single check/save. These extras would have to come from different sources (ie, a Chronicler's Luck and a character inspiration can be used to get to 3 dice, but not two Chronicler's Luck points).
  • According to RAW:
If circumstances cause a roll to have both advantage and disadvantage, you are considered to have neither of them, and you roll one d20. This is true even if multiple circumstances impose disadvantage and only one grants advantage or vice versa. In such a situation, you have neither advantage nor disadvantage.
Use of these two mechanics ignores this limitation - for rolls where Chronicler's Luck and the inspiration granted by Inspired Play are invoked, cancelling disadvantage and gaining advantage can both be done.
