Lycanthropes are bearers of a curse (lycanthropy) that can be passed from person to person. This curse involves transformation to an animal form (usually involuntary) and often violent and antisocial tendencies. It is well-known that lycanthropes are hard to kill and more affected by silver or magic weapons than other attacks. They also have some relationship with moonlight that appears to be antagonistic.
Werewolves are the most commonly occurring lycanthrope but other types are known to exist.
