Stealth
Stealth and hiding are not implemented very well, so here noted are a few clarifications and condensations of both the written rules and some rulings about them. Actual rules will be linked/cited; other points should be assumed to be interpretations.
- Being hidden has beneficial effects.
- Stealth is usually a Stealth(Dex) skill roll(RAW), and is the most common path to being considered hidden .
- Hiding usually requires an action, but one can wind up hidden in some edge cases without having taken the Hide action to do so.
- You usually need something to hide behind/in.
- Invisibility, full cover, 3/4 cover and heavy obscurement are enough to hide in on their own.
- Half cover and light obscurement aren't enough by themselves to hide in, but it may situationally be possible to do so at DM discretion.
- Stealth is countered by active and/or passive Perception checks (depending on who's looking and what they know about the hidden creature).
- A creature can be hidden from some opponents and not others with the same Stealth roll, as this depends on the Perception of the observer.
- Perception checks to detect creatures are generally harder in dim light.
Moving while hidden
This is a squishy area in the ruleset; it may be of benefit to describe the things you think might count in your favor or inquire about the details of the conditions you're thinking about hiding in.Considerations
- Consider the circumstances. Darkness, cover, relative alertness of the potential detecting parties and other factors will influence how difficult it is to remain hidden.
- Consider the action economy. Moving stealthily usually requires your action.
- Consider the distance. Moving stealthily requires moving comparatively slowly (halve your speed).
- Consider your path. A continuous path of things to hide behind works in your favor, and not having that definitely works against you.
- Consider your destination. If you intend to still be hidden when you stop moving, you will need to end your movement somewhere you could reasonably take the Hide action (behind cover or other obscuring conditions).
Hidden Movement
To move while hidden (under most circumstances):- Use an action to Hide (rolling Stealth).
- Move up to half your speed.
