Del

Imagine a human, but with pointed elven ears, elephant legs below the knee, and an elephant like tail. Welcome to the Del, a tough desert people with shrewd, efficient habits and unparallelled knowledge when it comes to building with stone.

Basic Information

Ecology and Habitats

Del are specifically adapted to deserts. With long lashes, mildly wrinkled skin to increase surface area, a generous helping of sweat glands to keep cool, and feet that are tough enough to withstand hot sand, Del do very well in their desert home of Delkhii.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Del are omnivorous, though many are primarily vegetarian, with minimal meat in their diet. This is due to the relative scarcity of prey on Delkhii. Plants tend to spring back more readily from particularly nasty Heating Seasons than fauna do, and as such, if Del want to have a steady supply of meat, they need to have ample populations of domesticated livestock. They do have herds of goats, primarily for milk and leather, though some varieties are bred for meat.  Notable dishes include:
  • Balyrkan- much like naan bread, this unleavened bread is a staple of the Del diet. Usually mildly salted, this doughy filling bread is a household staple.
  • Kaffe- the Del version of coffee. Imported from Enshunu, this has quickly taken hold in Del culture, and is quickly becoming a staple as well.
  • Shakshaka- A colorful dish made up of chopped onions, chili peppers, tomatoes and cumin, cooked in a skillet to form a rich sauce in which a couple of eggs are poached.
