Kaffe

What is your world's equivalent to tea or coffee?

Mechanics & Inner Workings

Depending on the type of kaffe and method of preparation, the caffeine content of a single serving can vary greatly. The caffeine content of a cup of kaffe varies depending mainly on the brewing method, and also on the variety. A 240-millilitre (8 US fl oz) cup of "kaffe brewed from grounds" contains 95 mg caffeine, whereas an espresso (25 ml) contains 53 mg.   Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant that reduces fatigue and drowsiness. At normal doses, caffeine has variable effects on learning and memory, but it generally improves reaction time, wakefulness, concentration, and motor coordination. The amount of caffeine needed to produce these effects varies from person to person, depending on body size and degree of tolerance. The desired effects arise approximately one hour after consumption, and the desired effects of a moderate dose usually subside after about three or four hours.

Manufacturing process

Kaffe is darkly colored, bitter, slightly acidic and has a stimulating effect in Del, primarily due to its caffeine content. It is one of the most popular drinks on Delkhii, and can be prepared and presented in a variety of ways. It is usually served hot. Sugar, sugar substitutes, milk or cream are often used to lessen the bitter taste.
Item type
Consumable, Food / Drink
Rarity
Very common on Delkhii Uncommon on Enshunu despite that being its planet of origin. Pulchra cannot metabolize caffeine, so kaffe is a relatively unpopular drink. Del, however, enjoy the caffeinated buzz that comes with it.
Raw materials & Components
Kaffe is a brewed drink prepared from roasted beans, the seeds of berries from certain fruit species. All fruit must be further processed from a raw material—the fruit and seed—into a stable, raw product; un-roasted, green kaffe. To process the berries, the seed is separated from the fruit to produce green kaffe. Green kaffe is then roasted, a process which transforms the raw product into a consumable product. Roasted kaffe is ground into a powder and mixed with water to produce a cup of kaffe.
