History
Bellbridge started as nothing more than an accident. A lare bridge crossing the river Naia had fallen into disrepair over the years, neglected by nearby kingdoms as a different route gained favor and priorities were shifted to other matters. Eventually, the bridge collapsed, injuring caravans traveling over it at the time. The tragic accident stranded the merchants in the area, giving them little choice but to remain as they recovered. As others came to the bridge only to discover its collapse, they traded and did regular business with the stranded merchants. Some offered to stay for protection, as it was not uncommon for wildlife to roam the area- and sometimes worse threats, not to mention unscrupulous travelers with less than good intentions.
It took several months before builders- volunteers and masons working for free, as well as others looking to see the bridge fixed- joined the camp. They began construction of a new bridge, something sturdier and more reliable. With no official funding, they worked pro bono, and supplies of food, drink, and coin were given by those who knew of the builders and others traversing the area. As the merchants healed, they elected to stay, finding the business along the once neglected route to be surprisingly lucrative. As soon as the bridge was complete, roads were paved and buildings constructed for lost or weary travelers to rest.
Finally, a large belltower was constructed to ward away packs of animals and warn residents of danger. Thus, the trade post received its official name: Bellbridge.
